Saeugling, Eldon, 1906-

Fish expert and long time head of the National Fish Hatchery and Aquarium in Guttenberg, Iowa. Saeugling spent most of his career at the Guttenberg facility, employed by the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (which later became the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service). After his retirement he continued his work collecting fish species to fill orders from universities and public aquariums. In 1960 the crown prince of Japan visited Chicago and requested a collection of fish that could be taken back to Japan. Saeugling was responsible for collecting the fish and shipping them to Chicago's Shedd Aquarium so that Mayor Richard J. Daley could present them to the visiting dignitary. These predatory species have since achieved notoriety in Japan as foreign invaders, threatening to cause the extinction of some native species. In 1937 Eldon married Mildred Winnall, a dedicated humanitarian. She prepared packages of food and clothing and distributed them to the poor on Indian reservations, and worked with missionary societies to aid those suffering the effects of World War II and the Vietnamese Conflict.
