examining the personalities of dictators and world leaders. Two years have
passed since the Ukraine War (Special Military Operations) began, and it is
widely known that theories of Putin and the Putin system have been actively
discussed in academia and the media. This article focused on the dictator Stalin,
not Putin, whom Putin has praised while“ inspiring” the people’s patriotism since
becoming president. Regarding Stalin, we tend to focus on Stalin’s“ achievements”
in his later years. For example, Stalin led the Soviet Union to victory over
Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War (velikaya otechestvennaya voina),
despite suffering the highest number of casualties, and made the Soviet Union
a victorious nation and elevated it to a nuclear power. The current“ mythical”
image of Stalin held by the Russian people also follows this trend. However, the
brutality and irrationality of this dictator that lie behind his“ achievements” can
be particularly difficult to understand. In this article, I will examine his youth,
seminary days, and his arrest and exile due to revolutionary movements, and
provide a perspective on the personality of the man who later became a dictator.
This article examined the footprints of Stalin, a man of steel, by tracing his youth,
including the changes in his environment as he entered a seminary, his expulsion
and arrest when he became aware of his underground activities, and his exile to
Siberia.
