THE KEY TO ALL MYTHOLOGIES has been constructed from notes found among the papers of the late Rev. Edward Casaubon (1784–1830). Casaubon, an English clergyman and scholar, spent much of his short life labouring in obscurity (some have said rightly so) on his magnum opus, The Key to All Mythologies. This book was never completed, and after his death Casaubon's library was poorly preserved, such that only a few fragments of his research remain today.

Broadly speaking, Casaubon's approach was syncretic. He attempted to organize mythologies from around the world into a unified system, all relating to a central set of motifs (the titular "key"). The surviving notes include a scant few examples of mythological figures that have been worked into his system, all drawn from European traditions, largely Greek. Whether this reflects how few of his notes are available today or how limited his research really was—that is left to conjecture. The entirety of what has been recovered so far is herein presented.
