Home to a plethora of heritage sites, there are numerous options for sightseeing in Beijing. Built in the early 15th-century, the Forbidden City encloses thousands of historic structures and is a mist-visit. The Bell and Drum Towers are two ancient time-keeping instruments that offer stunning views of the surrounding area’s hutongs. The early 15th-century Temple of Heaven complex is another quiet and beautiful site. Discover China’s more recent past at Chairman Mao’s Mausoleum, where you can join the long line of visitors waiting to see the political leader’s embalmed body; and the Tiananmen Square, the city’s most important political site. China’s most famous attraction, the Great Wall of China, is only a short bus ride away from the city. The tombs of 13 of Ming dynasty emperors also lie north of Beijing, surrounded by scenic sculpture-filled parks.
