AVALANCHE ACQUIRES DEFENSEMAN BRENT THOMPSON
DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche announced this afternoon that the Club has acquired defenseman Brent Thompson from the Florida Panthers organization for future considerations. Thompson will report directly to Colorado’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Hershey Bears. Thompson, 30, a six-foot, two-inch, 200-pound native of Calgary, Alberta has played 59 games to date with the Louisville Panthers (AHL), recording one goal, nine assists, and 170 penalty minutes. Originally selected 39th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1989 Entry Draft out of Medicine Hat (WHL), he was traded to the Winnipeg/Phoenix organization on August 8, 1996 before being signed as a free agent by the New York Rangers on August 27, 1997. The Florida Panthers signed Thompson as a free agent on July 27, 1999. Thompson tallied four goals, 22 assists, and 311 penalty minutes in 67 games with Louisville in 1999-00, and has NHL career totals of one goal, ten assists, and 352 penalty minutes in 121 contests. -AVS-
