Disasterpiece
And so the boiler-suited, mask wearing, 18 legged pantomime horse returns,
ready to scare parents and thrill children around the globe. While Slipknot now have glossy CD packaging and high hopes of going straight in at number one, they have not done anything as namby-pamby as mellowing out their
sound. In fact success just seems to have made them nastier, sharper and
downright sicker as the opening line of 'Disasterpiece' illustrates: "I
wanna slit your throat and fuck the wound". Nice! Jaunty ditties such as 'My
Plague' feature cheerful threats like, "You fuckin' touch me I will rip you
apart, I'll reach in and take a bite out of that shit you call a heart." But
despite bringing such violence into the mainstream there's no coherent
thought behind what they preach. Why ooze hatred and chaos, misanthropy and
societal malaise when you have no alternatives? If 'People=Shit' as their
opening salvo proclaims, through guitars so heavy they'd suck a black hole dry, why not take off the clown mask and start suggesting solutions?
Otherwise you may as well take up a gun and just blow every fucker away.
'Iowa' is a fantastic metal record, ferocious and inventive, but their rage
is that of psychotic adolescents rather than reasoning adults. You'll love
it!
