SA HIGHER EDUCATION
The South African Education system is divided into three levels: primary education, further and general education and higher education. The SA Higher Education system currently comprises eighteen universities and eleven technikons, now called Universities of Technology.
The HE sector is currently undergoing extensive restructuring to position itself to meet the national requirements for skills development in the context of globalisation. As of 1 January 2005 there will be 6 Technikons (universities of technology), 11 'traditional universities' and 6 Comprehensive institutions (offering both university and university of technology qualifications).
