As I find the time, I will put my English translation next to the Greek. The translations in italics are quick translations of "list" surrounding the arsenokoit* base and not of the larger context. The chronology expressed below is primarily based on the categories established by TLG, with changes as necessary when I find the TLG dates to be in error. The link from the Authors' name is a description of that author/work, mostly from the New Advent site's Catholic Encyclopedia. The link on the individual Greek title is the original TLG source citation--variants used, etc. The link on English translations takes you to another online translation in its larger context if one is available. Additionally, some of the TLG references may refer to reconstructions from Latin, obscure fragments, or misapplied authorship. As I run across these discrepencies I will post the source documentation and history.

As a final explanatory note, I have three primary differences in translation of arsenokoit* based on various academic sources and context . One translation is "homosexual slave trader", referencing Martin's work (Martin, Dale. Arsenokoites and malakos: Meanings and Consequences. Biblical Ethics and Homosexuality, Robert Brawley. Westminster Press: Louisville, 1996.). His argument for the economic subjugatory translation of arsenokoit* in many contexts is quite persuasive to me and given the texts that I have found, I am further convinced of his logic. It is well known that slavery was common in Greek and Roman cultures. It has further been well established that it was common for one's slave to function in a sexual capacity. The context of sex within the Greek and Roman cultures were not so well established along gender lines as with power lines so same-gender sexual behavior did not have the cultural baggage of "gay versus straight" as we think of it today. Therefore for a male slave owner to have sex with a male slave would not have assigned the slave owner a cultural label of "gay", but "powerful". (Cantarella, Bisexuality in the Ancient World, 1992, Yale Press; Williams, Roman homosexuality : ideologies of masculinity in classical antiquity, 1999, Oxford UP; Dover, Greek homosexuality, 1989, Harvard UP). I summarize these arguments to a greater degree on my Web site in an addendum on Greek homosexuality on my main Web site on Homosexuality and Christianity.

A second translation is "homosexual rape" and seems more appropriate in other contexts. This argument is explored in Boswell (Boswell, John. Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality. University of Chicago Press: Chicago, 1980). While Boswell's argument has many problems as pointed out posthumously by his critics, some of his work still seems valid in a limited number of contexts. The third translation is "having non procreative sex", whether with a male or female. That translation is defended below.

Collins (1987, "Development of the Sibylline Tradition", Principat, Bd. 20) divides the 2nd Oracle into Jewish segments, dated probably to the 3rd century CE, and the Christian segments, dated from the mid 2nd century CE to the 3rd century CE. OS 2:34-347 represents a deep intertwining of Jewish and Christian sections. Further, OS 2:39-153 is heavily interpolated with the Sentences of Pseudo-Phocylides, which Van der Horst dates between 30 BCE and 40 CE (Charlesworth, 1985, The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha). The use of a)rsenokoitei=n in the context below is unique since it is tied to the phrase para\ fu/sin, seen in only one other passage, Eusebius' Demonstratio Evangelica1.6.67.5 found below. The argument has already developed elsewhere supporting the contention that para\ fu/sin historically referred to non-procreative sex acts, like having sex with a barren woman, having non-vaginal sex with a woman, masturbation, etc. Additionally, the Eusebius and John Nesteutes passages are tied to male sex with women and would appear to exclude a translation associated with same gender sexual contact.Davies, Margaret. This document is listed in TLG as Clement of Rome, Century 2 CE. However, in the source they use, Paschke and Rehm, the passage is a quote from Eusebius (4 CE) who is quoting the Syrian Bardesanes work, "Book of the Laws of the Countries" who is apparently quoting from the Pseudo-Clementine Recognitions, thus the ancient attribution of this passage. However, this passage is not found in the other Greek record of Bardanes, the Pseudo-Caesarius, nor is it found in Rufinius' Latin translation (4 CE) (Die Pseudoklementinen II, Rekognitionen, Rehm and Strecker, 1994, Akademie Verlag, p. 284), so it seems to be a late addition to the document (Stanley Jones, 2001, personal letter). Regardless as can be clearly seen by comparing this passage to the one above for Eusebius, Preparation of the Gospel, the passages are identical and appears to be an error on the part of TLG.
