Geography

The Rural Municipality of Tache is located in eastern Manitoba, approximately 61 kilometres southeast of the capital city, Winnipeg. The Trans Canada Highway running east from Winnipeg provides easy access to the municipality. Tache finds itself sitting at the beginning of the rich fertile prairies that characterizes the eastern border of the Canadian Shield. The scenic Seine River meanders throughout the municipality. Lorette and Landmark are the municipality's largest centres, while Dufresne, St.Genevieve, Rosewood, Ross and Elm Grove are other significant centres.

History

The Rural Municipality of Tache was incorporated in 1880. This establishes Tache as one of the oldest municipalities in the Province of Manitoba. The municipality is named after Bishop Tache, one of the first bishops in Manitoba. The rich agricultural lands surrounding Tache attracted settlers from many parts of Europe and the world. Many families in Tache have roots to descendants who originally settled the land generations ago. The community is a cultural mosaic of people. French Canadian, Metis, English and Slavic cultures are well represented in the municipality's communities. With the development of the railway, settlement in the late 1800's steadily increased. Providing a direct line into the City of Winnipeg, farmers and grain producers saw the railway as an important addition to the area.

Economic Base

The economy of Tache is very diversified, with agricultural industries being the prominent employers. The municipality is the largest public sector employer, employing approximately 12 residents in various roles. Elite Swine, a hog producing plant, and Landmark Feeds, are the two most prominent agricultural companies. The municipality is also home to a grain elevator, a fertilizer dealer and a livestock veterinarian. With the Trans Canada Highway running through the municipality, many transportation companies are established here.

With its proximity to Winnipeg, larger centres such as Landmark and Lorette are favorable places for new families who want to escape living in the city. The future of Tache is very bright with Landmark and Lorette offering many schools, churches, and commercial services. Lorette, the largest centre, boasts many services. With four schools, several grocery stores, a medical centre, a Credit Union and the Dawson Trail Motor Inn and Restaurant, Lorette offers its residents and visitors a wide variety of amenities.
