Israel Invasion of Lebanon
2006-07-31
Press Release:

Contact: Ralph Ferrucci
Mr. Lamont’s unqualified support for Israel’s actions in Lebanon, Gaza and other heavily populated communities is unwarranted.
Israel’s actions have killed and harmed countless innocent civilians, done an incredible amount of damage to the infrastructure (including roads, water treatment plants, and buildings) and has interfered with the work of humanitarian aid groups.
I am appalled that Mr. Lamont’s has come out to support Israel’s attacks on innocent civilians.
To draw a comparison, during the conflict between England and the Irish Republican Army, not once did the British engage in massive bombing of Ireland in order to attack the I.R.A. The international community would not have tolerated such an action.
Mr. Lamont now stands with Joseph Lieberman in supporting the invasion that has killed, so far, 700 innocent civilians, most of them children, including 56 people yesterday in Qana.
Israel’s attacks in Gaza and Lebanon violate the Forth Geneva Convention prohibitions against collective punishment, i.e. the retaliatory killing of civilians, “targeted” assassinations, and destruction of the infrastructure of an occupied territory.
By supporting these actions in Gaza and Lebanon, Mr. Lamont and Mr. Lieberman are supporting Crimes against Humanity as outlined in the Forth Geneva Convention.
This is not the first time that Israel has violated this Convention. In fact, Israel bombed Qana ten years earlier hitting a UN compound killing 106 civilians.
For these atrocities against civilian populations, we then reward Israel with massive US foreign aid, 3 billion dollars per year: 1.2 billion dollars for economic purposes and another 1.8 billion dollars for military.
Our tax dollars are going for the death of civilians in Lebanon and the occupied territories. The Israeli government has spent $14 billion dollars on settlements in Gaza and the West Bank while one in three Israeli children live in poverty.
The United States needs to withdraw its aid to Israel until all Geneva Conventions are adhered to and attacks against innocent civilians cease. Only then can a meaningful peace come about in the Middle East.
