PORTSMOUTH, Va. (NNS) -- This year America's Big Stick takes the cup -- the Battenberg Cup, that is.

Though not the Stanley Cup, the prize won by USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) is as valuable to the Navy as the Stanley Cup is to the National Hockey League.

The Battenberg Cup is presented annually to the Atlantic Fleet Battle Efficiency winner, ship or submarine, with the greatest accumulation of crew achievements and awards. That's the entire Atlantic Fleet. This includes exhibiting the highest level of operational readiness and productivity during the competitive 12-month period.

During 2001, USS Theodore Roosevelt (TR) won the Battle "E" (battle efficiency) for best carrier in the Atlantic Fleet, the Capt. Edward F. Ney memorial award for food service excellence and the Adm. Flatley award for safety.

TR's Commanding Officer, Capt. Richard J. O'Hanlon, said that the Battenberg Cup is a tribute to the crew's hard work and dedication to duty, especially while helping fight the war on terrorism.

"This is a truly a great reward for a crew that has continued to strive above and beyond the call of duty through its pre-deployment work ups and its support of Operation Enduring Freedom," said O'Hanlon. "They have continued to meet and exceed every challenge that has been thrown to them."

Those challenges included a 189-day deployment that began Sept. 19 and included 159 consecutive days at sea without a port call.

Theodore Roosevelt is currently progressing through a Planned Incremental Availability (PIA) in preparation for another run at the Battenberg Cup next year.
