About This Information

The weather data is from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research; the house price data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ); the job advert data from the Department of Labour; the crime data from the New Zealand Police, and the rest of the data from Statistics New Zealand sources.

Most of the information is by New Zealand region (there are 16 regions); however, not all regions have separate data for all variables, in which case data for these regions is not presented.

The ranking is out of the number of regions (16). When data for a region is not available the region is not included in the ranking. The rank is for the highest number/percentage/temperature in all cases except unemployment and crime, where the rank is for the lowest percentage/number. For example: Auckland has the 2nd highest average winter temperature (14.7 degrees Celsius) and the 5th lowest percentage unemployment rate for the March 2005 Quarter (4.2%).

Turnover is a measure of the average number of new employees joining an employer and leaving an employer divided by the average number of jobs. The resulting percentage gives an indication of the stability of the workforce in that region. The higher the percentage the higher the turnover and the less stable the workforce; conversely the lower the percentage the lower the turnover and the more stable the workforce. Higher stability is often preferred as it can be an indicator of greater overall job security.
