Philippines to Represent Asean in Un Meetings in Ny, Geneva
MANILA, March 7 Asia Pulse - The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the Philippines will represent the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in United Nations meetings in New York and Geneva in its capacity as the current Chair of the ASEAN Standing Committee.This decision was reached by ASEAN Foreign Ministers during their Retreat in Siem Reap, Cambodia on March 1-2, after the UN accorded full Observer Status to ASEAN in December 2006. ASEAN Foreign Ministers also agreed to expand its relationship with the UN by according the international body the status of Full Dialogue Partner. As the present Chair of the ASEAN Standing Committee, the Philippines will convene an ASEAN-UN Meeting on Development tentatively scheduled on May 26 in Manila. The meeting aims to achieve a framework agreement that would define ASEAN-UN relations in future years. The Philippines will also invite U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to participate at the ASEAN Post Ministerial Conference scheduled in July.
