Population and Housing Census

The Population and Housing Census is one of the most important and extensive statistical surveys conducted traditionally, each ten years, in Europe and also in other countries of the world.
The Population and Housing Censuses in the period around the year 2000 were prepared according to standard methodological recommendations of international organizations of the UN and the European Union compiled on the basis of the UN Economic and Social Council resolution No. 1995/7 of 19 July 1995. The documents were followed by the ´Recommendations for the 2000 Round of Population and Housing Censuses in the EEC region´.

The Population and Housing Census in the Slovak Republic was prepared and conducted in compliance with the above-mentioned recommendations and according to Act No. 165/1998 Coll. of 12 May 1998 on 2001 Census of Population, Houses and Dwellings.
Several central and local state authorities and municipalities were involved in the preparations for the census. The law imposed the reporting duty concerning the census on the whole population of the Slovak Republic, i.e., citizens themselves filled the required data in the census forms.
Importance of the 2001 Population and Housing Census in the Slovak Republic was also in the fact that for the first time the full Census, it means the legislation, organization, methodology, data collection, data processing, publishing and data presentation was maintained to the full extent by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic.
