About Minerals and Energy

About the Minerals and Energy GroupRichard Sellers, Executive Director, DPIFM Minerals and Energy Division

Mining is important to the Territory. Important because it is the single most significant contributor of GSP, accounting for $2.5 billion in revenue each year and directly employing over 4,600 people. If you consider the petroleum industry as well, mining and petroleum make up over 20% of GSP, making them vital to the development of the Territory into the future.

My Minerals and Energy team within DPIFM is committed to supporting and advancing this vital industry sector. We achieve this through the work of several groups which deal with:

  • Investment attraction, through a 4 year $12 million program called Bringing Forward Discovery an initiative that promotes the prospectivity of the Territory to explorers and investors.
  • Supply of new generation geoscientific data that is made available to prospective explorers and investors.
  • Support for companies going through the processes of the granting and maintenance of exploration licences and mining titles.
  • Assistance and advice in indigenous liaison and land access issues.
  • And, promoting the opportunities in a variety of energy related areas, including oil, gas, petroleum, geothermal and alternative energy.

Minerals and Energy is also responsible for the enforcement of compliance issues associated with the Mining Management Act, and as such conducts mine audits and inspections to ensure compliance with Mining Management Plans and relevant standards.  Compliance issues relating to occupational health and safety are to be handled by WorkSafe.

These areas and many others are covered in greater detail on this web site. Please take the time to browse through it, I’m sure you will find it informative, educational and quite surprising!
