Roadways PM flags off Ahmedabad expressway Our Bureau
AHMEDABAD, Jan 29 THE Prime Minister, Mr A.B. Vajpayee, has dedicated to the nation the first phase of the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway up to Nadiad, spanning a distance of 43.40 km which has been completed at a cost of Rs 180 crore. Part of the ambitious 5,846 km Golden Quadrilateral being executed by the National Highways Development Project (NHDP), the second phase covering the 49.9 km Nadiad-Vadodara sector would be completed by December 2003 at an estimated cost of Rs 295 crore. "We need good, sturdy roads to open up paths of development. Much of the agricultural produce of our farmers, which normally rot due the lack of proper transportation facilities, can reach far off destinations such as Europe if the road connectivity to the big cities are good. We are yet to knock on all doors of development that could open to us as is borne by the annual petrol import bill of some Rs 90,000 crore.", Mr Vajpayee said. The Ahmedabad-Vadodara is part of National Expressway 1 and will have entry/exit points at Nadiad and Anand.
