March 2, 2000 - Giuliani Leads Clinton 48-41 Percent In NY Senate Race, Quinnipiac College Poll Finds; Mayor's Favorability Is Up, Despite Diallo Controversy


New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has opened a 48 - 41 percent lead over First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in their race for the U.S. Senate, his biggest lead so far in this neck-and-neck contest, according to a Quinnipiac College poll released today.
Mayor Giuliani leads among men voters 55 - 34 percent, while Mrs. Clinton holds a 47 - 42 percent lead among women. Giuliani leads 51 - 36 percent upstate and 59 - 31 percent in the suburbs, while Clinton leads 56 - 35 percent in New York City.
The Mayor leads 51 - 37 percent among white women and 48 - 38 percent among Jews. White voters back Giuliani 56 - 32 percent, while black voters back Clinton 90 - 4 percent, and Hispanic voters back Clinton 72 - 24 percent.
From February 22 - 28, Quinnipiac College surveyed 1,842 New York State registered voters. The survey has a margin of error of +/- 2.3 percent.
"Mayor Giuliani has his highest favorability rating statewide since Quinnipiac College began polling a possible Giuliani-Clinton race in February, 1999. Even in New York City, where protests of the Amadou Diallo verdict and criticism of the Mayor made headlines during four days of this survey, Giuliani's favorability was not affected," said Quinnipiac College Poll Director Douglas Schwartz.
"The Mayor now has solid leads among white women and Jewish voters. White women have been a bellwether, voting for the winner in every statewide race in New York since 1990. And traditionally, Jewish voters go Democratic by large margins."
By a 42 - 26 percent margin, voters statewide have a favorable opinion of Giuliani, with 24 percent mixed and 8 percent saying they don't know enough to form an opinion. Giuliani's favorability was 36 - 26 percent in a February 6 Quinnipiac College Poll, at the start of the Amadou Diallo trial. Among New York City voters, Giuliani's favorability is 36 - 40 percent, little changed from a 33 - 41 percent favorability February 6.
Clinton's favorability is 34 - 35 percent, with 25 percent mixed and 5 percent saying they don't know enough to form an opinion. Her favorability rating February 6 was 35 - 30 percent. By a 39 - 28 percent, women have a favorable opinion of Clinton, while men give her a negative 28 - 43 percent favorability rating.
