Back in '98 the MMVAs weren't quite the extravaganza that they are today, but they were definitely in the process of growing into something ginormous. The crowds were getting bigger and crazier; the street was shut down to make room for all the fans who came to see people like the Goo Goo Dolls, A Tribe Called Quest AND the Smashing Pumpkins who opened the show. Oh yeah - and the Pumpkins almost didn't make it, but they showed up just in freakin time to rock everyone's faces off. Howie and AJ from the Backstreet Boys were in the house to pick up an award, and it seemed like half the crowd was there just to catch a glimpse of them. Also: laser pointers were everywhere - nobody onstage escaped without being spotted with a red dot.
