At first, the thought of Princess Diana and Hard Rock Hotel together was odd to me. But if you focus on her charitable side, that dovetails with the Hard Rock "Love All/Serve All" mantra. And basically, she was the rock star of British royalty.
That makes it all better for me as far as the current exhibition, Dresses for Humanity, which will be at the Hard Rock Hotel through Aug. 14. It shows off 12 of Diana's outfits, not just gowns but also five business suits. Those suits have never been seen before in the U.S. The collection represents stages of her life, from child princess bride to single mom/humanitarian.
Each ensemble is enclosed and on a mannequin. Most of them have a large photo nearby of Diana in action in that outfit with text about what she did that day. You get a feel for her size (not tiny -- downright normal sized).
Among the highlights: the first gown after the divorce that she wore in a public appearnance. It was designed by Catherine Walker and features pearls and sequins that were sewn on by three ladies over a period of three weeks. Another significant one is a fashion milestone: the blue strappy number that she wore to Versailles. It's considered to be her first "sexy" dress.
