It's official: 'Futurama' is reborn!

Futurama-returns_lHoly Bender Bending Rodríguez!

Six years after getting axed by Fox, Futurama is being resurrected on Comedy Central.

A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox Television confirms that the cable net has ordered  26 new episodes of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's late, great animated series to air beginning in 2010. The studio cites Futurama's "blockbuster" performance on DVD and in reruns on Comedy Central as the reason for its rebirth.

Hmmm... sound familiar?

"When we brought back Family Guy several years ago, everyone said that it was a once in a lifetime thing -- that canceled series stay canceled and cannot be revived," 20th Century Fox TV Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden said in a joint statement. "But Futurama was another series that fans simply demanded we bring back, and we couldn’t have been happier when Matt and David agreed that there were many more stories yet to tell."

Adds Groening: "We’re thrilled Futurama is coming back. We now have only 25,766 episodes to make before we catch up with Bender and Fry in the year 3000."

I have a hunch Groening isn't the only one doing a happy dance. (That's your cue to start filling up the comments section.)

Dr Zoidberg Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 09:15 AM EST

Bender asked me to pass this message onto his loyal fanbase of pathetic human meatbag losers "101001010110- 00110000101011110000-0000101-1110 ".

Which roughly translates as " Good news everyone- the biggest star in the history of television ( me -Bender) is returning to your unworthy screens .. so pucker up dirtbags and prepare to kiss my Shiny Metal Ass - again! "
If only I had one-millionth of his charm and eloquence maybe I would be the popular one { sighs }.

texlawzkr Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 08:33 AM EST

Sweet gorilla of Eastern Manila! FINALLY, the best cartoon on TV is coming back.

Wyrd Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 07:50 AM EST

"And then we kick it up a notch with our spice weasel!"
It will be good to have new Futurama. Yes, and I imagine some other happy folks include the cast of Futurama, *and* the good folks at Comedy Central who are trying to get their ratings up. This will be a good move for them.

only reason Futurama got canceled is because Rupert Murdoch h a t e s Al Gore who appeared on the show ... but the only thing he loves more than hating liberals is making $$$

Futurama - Check, do the Happy Dance!
Firefly - What? No?, sob...

Stuck with House MD till 2010.

Froggy4play Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 08:29 PM EST

I couldn't agree more with whiterabbit. I loved family guy for many years as i did futurama. But the decline in comedy for family guy leaves me feeling like i've been let down. I truly hope that Futurama does not do the same thing. These 2 shows have always been my favorite shows to watch. King of the hill also gets my nod , hopefully someone will pick this up in a couple of years. :)

BGD Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 08:11 PM EST

Eugene Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 07:38 PM EST

Yahoooo!!!!! Bring it on!

Anyone think it's funny how many FOX series have gotten revived in the last few years.....

And, yeah, total agreement with all the calls for more Firefly as well!

Hey, Matt G. and David X.: how about a Futurama episode where the Planet Express crew stumbles across a ratty transport ship from a wild west dimension with a crew of 9 on board?

Dr Zhivago Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 07:37 PM EST

BAD NEWS EVERYONE!!!!

Rebecca E. Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 07:34 PM EST

Score! I think I've seen every episode of Futurama at least twice now and I can't wait to see the new episodes.

Now if Fox would only do the same for Firefly. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

Rebecca E. Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 07:30 PM EST

Score! I think I've reached the point now where I've seen every episode of Futurama at least twice and I am so psyched for new episodes.

Wouldn't it be cool if Fox did the same thing for Firefly? Oh how I miss that show.

Lookitsjeska Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 07:27 PM EST

Brock Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 02:49 PM EST

Now hopefully Futurama won't get unfunny like Family Guy has.

whiterabbit Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 02:37 PM EST

finally a great show getting a second chance. too bad FOX decided to cancel King of the Hill. But I guess there's always hope. Plus Futurama is a billion times better than Family Guy.

Which do you mean? The animated or live-action one? I loved the live one, which starred the way underrated Patrick Warburton. That guy is probably funny while he's *sleeping*!

Wickeddoll Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 01:43 PM EST

This news made my 19-year-old daughter, as well as my 44-year-old friend very happy! I liked the show back in the day, but didn't think it was as funny as the *old* Family Guy series. Now I'd probably like it better than what FG is doing *now*.

I guess the strongest motivation for network execs to renew long-canceled series like these is...they're ANIMATED! No need to rebuild sets (there aren't any!). No need to find and hire those costly actors (they're busy moving on with their lives, anyway!). It's cheaper than ever to farm out work to Asia (no studio costs! No unions!). There's no downside to renewing an animated show, especially a popular one. Now if they would only pull Nathan Fillion back for another go-round with "Firefly"...

Jesusman Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 01:27 PM EST

sara Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 01:24 PM EST

what is "layalty"?

Rich Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 01:19 PM EST

Why, when i was a Fox executive, i never cancelled shows...all i demanded was layalty. If i had that, for all i cared employees could sit around drinking beer in their underpants!

Pete Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 01:18 PM EST

Good news, indeed ...but I am already in my pajamas...

Here in Washington DC, we bureaucrats of all grades also want the Hermes Conrad action figure to come back, mon! Please - Matt - re-authorize that as an adjunct to the series returning.

Vin Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 01:10 PM EST

To the mandatorium!

Bro_Winky Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 01:06 PM EST

Yes! I can’t believe those idiot Fox executives cancelled Futurama in the first place. I’m glad they were all beaten savagely and ground up into Torgo’s Executive Powder...ahhh, that soothes the fire.
