Avril Lavigne Strips Down Sound for Introspective November LP

Rolling Stone hits the studio with Avril Lavigne, who’s hooking up musically with husband Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 on her next disc, for a progress report in our new issue. The big news: Lavigne isn’t looking to repeat the success of 2007’s smash single “Girlfriend,” nor is she looking to maintain her status as punk-pop’s snotty princess. On the as-yet-untitled November disc, Lavigne says she’s aiming for a more introspective sound with a stripped-down rock record driven by acoustic guitars.

“Life, that’s what this record is about,” Lavigne tells Rolling Stone. “It’s so easy for me to do a boy-bashing pop song, but to sit down and write honestly about something that’s really close to me, something I’ve been through, it’s a totally different thing.” Even though Lavigne is stepping away from the power-punk, she still packs the catchy hooks on songs like “Darlin’,” which was the second song Lavigne ever wrote as a 15-year-old living in Napanee, Ontario. Butch Walker also worked on Lavigne’s fourth LP.

While Lavigne’s previous albums hid her voice behind walls of production, her vocals are front-and-center on new tracks like “Everybody Hurts.” Other titles include “Black Star,” which was originally going to be the theme song for Avril’s fragrance of the same name, and “Fine.” “My last record was about loud guitars and energy, but this I wanted to really feel my music,” Lavigne told RS.

For more on Lavigne’s upcoming album, check out the In the Studio feature in the new issue of Rolling Stone.

avril is very sweet and very nice, if you actually get to know her. her biggest problem is that she’s seeing someone who had a very unusual spelling of the name derek.
such a shame. ‘deryck’s don’t give good head - fact.

matt | 8/25/2009, 1:15 am EST

holy shit there are still avril fans? the title almost got me when they said avril strips down then i read the rest of it and got sad.

Anonymous | 8/24/2009, 9:28 pm EST

who cares?

skaker bouy | 8/24/2009, 8:05 pm EST

Yes, well, at 14 could you move to nyc, and live by yourself. I think not. A few people , who have written in here, couldn’t find nyc on a map, just for that, this lady is worthy. And she isn’t dumb like twitney, or paris ontario.

Good for Avril !!!!!

truth | 8/24/2009, 2:45 pm EST

let’s be completely honest here - what repulses everyone about avril is her ’s#!4 don’t stank’ attitude that has basically wrecked up all prospects for us even remotely seeing her as a credible artist. real artists don’t talk as defensively as avril does (& let’s face it, she does talk a lot of crap). we’ve seen several credible young artists before in record history and avril sure as hell doesn’t come close. she’s no innovator, no trailblazer, no voice of a generation. just a media whore milking it for whatever the hell it’s worth.

KCV | 8/24/2009, 1:14 pm EST

i see comments about people writing songs for her…but gee whiz, look at the motown era (holland/dozier/holland wrote a majority of the songs for the motown artists), elvis presley, etc, it doesn’t mean you’re bad if you have outside songwriters……

PK | 8/24/2009, 1:10 pm EST

I’m not a fan, but I give her credit for trying to do something different.

why | 8/23/2009, 10:22 am EST

why do people have to settle for this piece of crap when there are shitloads of great music elsewhere?

Xj9 | 8/23/2009, 6:16 am EST

I can’t wait untill that album comes out! cheers to avril!!! :D

Like the news that it’s going to be more about the first two albums :D I liked those two more then the last one. Not that I didn’t like that one though.

Lachlan | 8/23/2009, 5:48 am EST

Avril Lavigne kicks ass no matter what style of music she incorporates into her albums, she writes what’s real, she writes what she wants to share with everyone else so for those people who don’t appreciate that then shut the hell up and leave her alone, she’s not some kind of public rag doll, she has her her mind and she does what she does best - which is being herself without giving a damn what others think, so if you don’t appreciate the best musician ever then get a life and find something better to do, Avril Lavigne’s the best

melric | 8/23/2009, 5:24 am EST

i love avril 2 d core…… i think shes d best….. and surely she Wont ROCK wth this new album….. SHe’ll RULE…….. :)

James Ho | 8/23/2009, 2:50 am EST

Avril may not be the best artiste of all time, but she has her own merits under her belt, and I love her for that alone.

Re: Jay | 8/22/2009, 10:57 pm EST

Oh and as for your assertion that people ‘do’ know those bands I highly doubt it. Half of America doesn’t realize that southern Ontario is further south than a dozen American states. You are right in that music is subjective but I do think that rock and roll fans like a similar kind of music and if you were to ask one which record is better; the best Avril record vs. the best Stills record I bet the Stills would take it.

Re: Jay | 8/22/2009, 10:53 pm EST

So you honestly believe that Avril calls all the shots and those people just ‘help’ right? On her first album The Matrix recieved 50 thousand dollars for each song plus 4% of the record profits to write her singles for her. If you honestly believe that those three professional songwriters (who wrote hits for Britney and Christina) merely added to Avril’s songs then there is no hope for you. As for Butch, he had a hit of his own with “Freak of the Week” in the 90s with the Marvelous 3 and has since written hits and produced the likes of Pink, All American Rejects, Lindsay Lohen, Hot Hot Heat and Fall Out Boy. Ben Moody wrote “Nobody’s Home” as it sounds far more like Evanescence than anything Avril did. And of course they will say nice things about here. Fuck, if she took one of my songs and wanted to say she wrote ALL of it I’d let her if it meant the kind of cash flow that the 14 year old fans produce. Think about it. Avril Lavigne had a well connected Dad who got her a deal and she was smartly marketed as the “Anti Britney” with that stupid “Complicated” video. Avril is a puppet. Her husband is a good songwriter though so I’ll bet her album shows his influence. You DO realize that Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohen, Christina Aguilara, Kelly Clarkson etc. all claim to write their own songs too right? Just because you get your name on something doesn’t mean you wrote it; not in today’s music industry that’s for sure.

Grunge Match | 8/22/2009, 9:51 pm EST

I thought, on the second disk “she’s growing up, some decent tracks, moving away from the bubble gum, could have a serious future” Then the last album droped, it was horrible beyond words, she should hide her face at the mention of it.

Hope she’s realzed how bad being a pop-bitch is and tries to be a real musician / songwriter again.

Tyler | 8/22/2009, 4:45 pm EST

She should think of more original song names.

mikey | 8/22/2009, 2:32 pm EST

avril is like britney!!

Boy oh Boy | 8/22/2009, 2:26 pm EST

I really need to grudge f Avril and leave her a mess.

avril | 8/22/2009, 11:07 am EST

anybody here heard het GODAWFUL “COVER” of SOAD’S Chopsuey? that’s how fucking talented this bitch is. seriously.

Lachlan | 8/22/2009, 9:11 am EST

Avril Lavigne’s the best thing out there in the music industry, so who cares about what all these jackasses think, Avril is beautiful and for the souless basterds out there who don’t agree then to hell with them, she makes her fans proud just by writing her music and we support her all the way, the new album’s gonna be another insight to what she’s made of and another reason to love her the way so much of us already do. Can’t wait for the album Avril

Denny | 8/22/2009, 7:58 am EST

THAT’S FUCKIN’ AWESOME! I CAN’T WAIT!!

The original flat chested g-string diva wannabe who when she’s not ripping somebody else off is singing song about nothing! She’s annoying! Damn you Canada!

yum! | 8/21/2009, 12:41 pm EST

she’s hot !!!

Heyo | 8/21/2009, 12:26 pm EST

Thank you rolling stone!

brock_vond | 8/21/2009, 9:57 am EST

that thing on her leg, its a guitar strap …..

Avril Freak | 8/21/2009, 9:37 am EST

If you look at her right leg nt he picture she has something on it I wonder if she did something to it. But any way I hope she sings with Deryck on the new album that would be really cool.
I CAN”T WAIT FOR IT TO COME OUT.

Tom | 8/21/2009, 7:50 am EST

I’ve heard that on this CD there will be 6 songs written by Avril alone, the rest co-written by Evan Taubenfeld(her old guitar player from 2002-2004) and Butch Walker. Her husband produced the majority of the songs.
And she wants to do a small theatre tour.
YEAH, such a sellout move…

Only the pop songs she has written with Dr.Luke on her last CD were utter crap. What she has written(alone by herself) for Under My Skin was awesome. She is a talented songwriter.

willi | 8/21/2009, 6:47 am EST

“everybody hurts” (r.e.m.) and “black star” (radiohead)? what does she do? go thru her cd’s and rip off song titles the same way she ripped off her “punk” attitude? if she is punk, then punk truly is dead.

willi | 8/21/2009, 6:44 am EST

“everybody hurts” and black star”? what does she do? just go thru her cd’s and rip off song titles like she ripped off her “punk” attitude? if she’s punk, then punk truly is dead.

willibeans | 8/21/2009, 6:39 am EST

“everybody hurts” and “black star”. what does she do? go thru her cd’s and rip off song titles from other bands, just like she rips off her “punk” attitude. if she’s punk, then punk truly is dead.

Calm it... | 8/21/2009, 3:48 am EST

I’m an Avril fan, but I also love the Shins, Bright Eyes, Cursive, blah, blah, blah, you get the point.

Basically, we all like different things and everyone should cool it.

A funny thing about many of the people posting on this site is that they haven’t done their research…

Avril does write most of her own *lyrics*, and some of her music. She also wrote Leona Lewis’ “I Will Be”, and many other hits that artists like Kelly Clarkson recorded.

Also everyone connects to different sounds and lyrics. I have friends that can’t get past the Rolling Stones, and friends that can’t get past Britney’s latest album. I respect both of these groups of friends because they don’t try to connect with music that they can’t identify with. I respect a girl, or guy, that can honestly and shamelessly connect with a Cher song as long as they remain true to what inspires them. Not everyone has lived the same life, and walked in the same shoes…

Ha.. Hot just came on the radio..

I’m really looking forward to her new album, not because of the “hype” or anything, but because she keeps evolving, which I find intersting. SHe’s put out a little bit of everything within the pop genre, and we are getting to watch her grow as a person through her music.

And insulting people on the internet is ridiculous, because we all fit into some random cliche that can easily be made fun of.
Mkae fun of me all you want, I’ll laugh with you.

yay avril | 8/21/2009, 3:28 am EST

how about getting your facts straight first before dissing avril? *rolls eyes*

Jay | 8/21/2009, 2:49 am EST

People should like whatever music that they like, some people want to make music a dictatorship, you don’t have to listen to “kings of leon” “arcade fire” “yeah yeah yeahs” “the shins” or any other scenester band to be cool, it just makes people look like music snobs/douches.

Jay | 8/21/2009, 2:36 am EST

Prt 2. As for ben moody you should have read an old interview he did saying “I don’t know where the perception of Avril being a record industry puppet came from but she writes CATCHY POP HOOKS” “Avril, Celine Dion, Alexisonfire and Nickelback” you forgot shania and bryan adams on your popular canadian artists hatefest, people know of hot hot heat and sam roberts it’s just that nobody cares. Not everyone is gonna like YOUR favorite artists.

Mike | 8/21/2009, 2:30 am EST

Newsflash to those in denial: Avril actually writes her own songs, as much as you try to deny it - on the songwriting credits, many lyrics are written purely by Avril herself and the music is composed by Ben Moody, Butch Walker etc.
She’s a talented lass, and I think out of all the female popstars out there today, she has the most potential (as much as you will try to deny it)

Jay | 8/21/2009, 2:22 am EST

I don’t know the re:jay person is but here, butch walker, ben moody, the matrix “heavy hitters”? their not timberland, redone etc. butch for example biggest hit was “my happy ending” that’s it!, he’s worked with numerous artists, he was asked to be on Avril’s new album not because he’s a “hitmaker” but because their good friends OUTSIDE of music. Maybe you should have read a recent interview with lauren christy of the matrix with mtv talking about how working with Avril was “the real deal” btw if they were “heavy hitters” how did skye sweetnam and a 2004 album with a young katy perry albums do? continued…

Diamond | 8/21/2009, 12:34 am EST

@HUH?!?, Avril had already made her dark album before kelly “under my skin” and Tom is right it sold 10 million. Times have changed though selling 6 million would be great today, coldplay’s last album was the top selling album selling only 6.8 million copies. Album sales have dropped 20% in the last year alone, also kelly should have continued the coarse she was on because her new album is on pace to sell LESS than “my december” 1.3 to 1.5 million albums. Love Avril, we don’t have a album title yet, and she’s a great talent.

Re: Jay | 8/21/2009, 12:28 am EST

She doesn’t write her own songs. She gets heavy hitters like Butch Walker, The Matrix, Ben Moody etc to write them and takes the credit. Anybody would have a hit with those guys pulling the strings. Do you really think that they get paid their fees and percentages for helping her fix a chord or two? She’s a huge fraud. I hate the fact that Canadian music is represented by shit like Avril, Celine Dion, Alexisonfire and Nickelback and nobody knows about Hot Hot Heat, Sam Roberts or The Stills. It’s fucking tragic.

She | 8/21/2009, 12:07 am EST

can’t sing, it’s all studio wash. Listen to her live on tv where they was it a lil and she still sucks.

Anonymous | 8/21/2009, 12:05 am EST

Personally, I haven’t heard a single from her that was nearly approaching “introspective” or “thoughtful”, but stranger turns have been made by artists in the past. I doubt it’ll be all it’s cracked up to be, but hopefully it’ll be less insipid than her last one.

Also, it cracks me up when people leave messages for artists on the comments on these articles, as though they actually read them. How arrogant.

Jay | 8/20/2009, 11:32 pm EST

One of the only pop artists who writes her music. I love the fact she’s going against the pop grain of synth dance pop and making music for the right reasons as to making pop singles. This is the future of music, due to poor album sales artists will have to cut down on production costs by making their own albums. Btw Avril is gorgeous!

john | 8/20/2009, 11:32 pm EST

she’s hot, but her music sux, seriously.

Alex | 8/20/2009, 11:03 pm EST

Avril’s TBDT was a complete crap. I don’t know if I’ll believe in her lyrics anymore. And maybe she will have JUST slow songs, that would be crap too.

dumar | 8/20/2009, 10:01 pm EST

linda como siempre…

Ry | 8/20/2009, 9:51 pm EST

Love all her albums and sure that the next album is gonna be awesome as well !

Butch | 8/20/2009, 9:38 pm EST

Butch Walker is the only thing that makes Avril remotely passable. Without song doctors pulling the strings she’s nothing.

Steve | 8/20/2009, 9:21 pm EST

nice

cum-guzzling whore | 8/20/2009, 8:18 pm EST

what?

you must be a human garbage can for anticipating trash like this. fuck you. you should be shot in the gooch

I guess | 8/20/2009, 7:49 pm EST

I’ll give her that she is a talented writer. Anyone that can write their own hits gets respect from me, even if I don’t care for the music. As for the Kelly Clarkson bashing, she has more talent in one of her fat a** cheaks than any of you (or any other pop star) has or will ever have. She has the best voice and pop and is a talented song writer… even if I don’t like her music.

Avrilfan! | 8/20/2009, 7:15 pm EST

To everyone who is dissing on Avril, and complaining about TBDT. Avril said when she was coming out with that cd that she wanted to write a album that was just fun to perform live and to get the audience pumped up. This time she is again taking a different way and even going for a different tour which she said she wants to have in a theater. The people who are dissing on her are so one sided and don’t see to have any other views except that they are always right. Unfortunately, being that close minded is not good. Avril is constantly changing her style and her music. if you didn’t like it then to bad, because complaining about it won’t change a thing. Just accept Avril for who she is and if you don’t like it then go and suck it.

What? | 8/20/2009, 6:25 pm EST

Can’t you read? It’s not crappy pop this time. It’s going to be a rock record.

my most anticipated album of the year.

Oh no... | 8/20/2009, 5:55 pm EST

…She’s back to unleash more crap upon us? No thanks. Her last album sounded like Britney Spears attempting to be Alanis Morissette. Which is so funny, cause she dissed Britney for being a skin-baring pop princess and then she became exactly that. She’s a sellout, so I don’t care.

Tom | 8/20/2009, 5:29 pm EST

Remember Avril’s “Under My Skin”?
That was also “dark, introspective” and sold 10m!
You can’t compare Avril to Kelly Clarkson.

Jere | 8/20/2009, 5:21 pm EST

uhh… the last album was one of the best pop albums released that year.

As long as Butch is working on it, I’m happy.

HUH?!? | 8/20/2009, 4:59 pm EST

Does anybody remember this EXACT SAME article except the name was “Kelly Clarkson” and the “dark, introspective” album went on to stiff like it had just downed a handful of viagra? I can’t wait to read the article next year about Avril’s “triumphant return” to mall-punk.

mugly | 8/20/2009, 4:58 pm EST

thank god the last album was crap - still love you Avril

AlvinDark | 8/20/2009, 4:57 pm EST

Seriously who the hell cares?
