Dan Gross: To Daniels, a 'Precious' film

"USUALLY I make a movie and I expect it to go straight to DVD, so it's weird being received this way," said Lee Daniels Sunday about the critical acclaim that has met his new film, "Precious."

The film, based on the novel "Push" by Sapphire, screened twice at the Philadelphia Film Festival 18 1/2, once to benefit BEBASHI (Blacks Educating Blacks About Sexual Health Issues). The movie, about a teen girl who is emotionally, physically and sexually abused, is as tremendous as it is harrowing.

Wynnefield native Daniels, who produced "Monster's Ball," "Shadowboxer" and "The Woodsman," says it's "a story that's universal." Actress Gabby Sidibe says that being photographed on red carpets and hearing people compliment her acting is "weird and amazing." The film is her first experience acting. Actress Xosha Roquemore also attended Sunday's screenings. Don't be surprised when Mo'Nique, who appeared in Daniels' "Shadowboxer" in a dramatic role, gets an Oscar nomination for playing the world's worst mother. The film opens Nov. 13.

'Booted' off to a busy start

Alan Ruck, of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Spin City," started work yesterday on "Booted," the indie comedy that has been shooting for a week. Jerry Blavat, rapper Azizz, NBC10's Bill Henley, Doug Shimell and DJ Omega, 610 WIP's Howard Eskin and Marc Farzetta, 94 WYSP's Gordon and sandwich mogul Tony Luke, Jr. are among those who have shot cameos for the film, by Shaun Paul Costello.

Ruck plays a meter maid in the film and shot a scene yesterday with Ryan Dunn of "Jackass." During a visit to the set yesterday we asked Ruck about the death of filmmaker John Hughes, who directed him in "Bueller."

"We weren't buds, but he gave me the greatest film role I've ever had and I will be forever grateful," Ruck said. As for Dunn, he says he's soon off to shoot "Jackass 3" and also a new show for Spike TV that also features Bam Margera.

VH1 chick strips here

Farrah Sinclair, one of the busty blondes from VH1's "Rock of Love with Bret Michaels" and "Charm School," dances at the World Famous Gold Club (1416 Chancellor) in Center City tomorrow through Saturday.

In other strip-club happenings . . .

* 21-year-old Toya, one of three

contestants to use Phillies gear in her outfit, took home the $500 prize Sunday in the Varsity Tryouts contest at Cheerleaders (Front & Oregon). Attorney Conor Corcoran and Your Humble Narrator were among judges.

* On Sunday, Cheerleaders hosts PinUps for Pitbulls, to raise awareness for the pit-bull breed, with all proceeds going to

local rescue groups. There's an outdoor festival with pet adoptions and educational seminars from 2 to 6 p.m., followed by a burlesque gala inside the club. It's $15 for general admission, or $30 for VIP access with a two-hour open bar and dinner. For info, visit pinupsforpitbulls.com

Shila off Bonaduce's show

Shila, the female co-host of Danny Bonaduce's 94 WYSP morning show, worked her last day there Friday. Her picture was still on the station's Web site early yesterday, but now it features only Bonaduce and producer/co-host Metro. "No drama, just radio," is how our source summed up the staffing split.

Out and about

* Dodgers pitcher Vicente Padilla

returned to 32ฐ (16 S. 2nd), an old haunt from his days with the Phillies, over the weekend with a large crew of friends. The guys stayed in the VIP area till closing and Padilla tipped the staff very well throughout the night.

* Dodgers Jim Thome, Randy Wolf, Casey Blake and Brad Ausmus loaded up on steak and fish at Davio's (111 S. 17th) Saturday night. Manager Joe Torre went there for a late dinner Sunday, after the Phillies demolished the Dodgers, 11-0.

We're told Torre was the picture of class, and came with signed baseballs and memorabilia for Davio's staff.

* Actor Ben Foster and director Oren

Moverman of "The Messenger," which played the Philadelphia Film Festival, lunched Sunday at the Pad Thai Shack (18th & Sansom).

* Darren Daulton stopped by Scannicchio's (Broad & Porter) the other day on his way down to appear on Comcast SportsNet.

Really nice of Joe Torre to be thinking of others at a time he'd probably just like a night off. Classy.
