Northern Group Islands Final Result
This report presents the Northern Group islands 2006 Census result. This is the
second release relating to the 2006 Census, the first was the preliminary results,
released in January 2007 soon after the count.
The Northern Group islands (where appropriate will be referred to as North)
comprises of seven islands namely Palmerston, Pukapuka, Nassau, Manihiki,
Rakahanga, Penrhyn, and Suwarrow and these islands remain relatively isolated
from the Southern Group island as well as from the main island Rarotonga.
Consumer Price Index
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for June quarter 2009 was 118.1, up by 11.2% over June quarter 2008 and it continued to show an upward trend of 2.2% over March quarter this year.
Population Estimates & Vital Statistics
Total estimated population for June quarter 2009 was 22,500. Total resident population is currently estimated at 12,000 for June 2009 quarter.
Tourism Migration
Total visitor arrivals for June quarter 2009 (25,532) increased by 34.1% when compared to the previous quarter (19,045) and by 9.3% when compared to the same quarter in 2008 (23,356).

Banking Statistics
Total lending for June quarter 2009 increased by 0.6% over the previous quarter.
Miscellaneous Statistics
Total value of building approvals in June quarter 2009 decreased by 72.4% when compared to March quarter 2009.
Trade statistics
Balance of trade for March 2009 quarter showed a deficit of $62.3 million. This has deteriorated by $4.2 million over the previous quarter.
