Brazil Steadfast in Refusal Not to Recognize Honduran Election

Tuesday, December 01, 2009

ESTORIL, Portugal  —  Brazil's president is standing by his refusal to recognize the outcome of elections in Honduras, saying they are the result of "political vandalism."

Luis Inacio Lula da Silva says "the Brazilian position is not to accept the election process in Honduras."

He said Tuesday at a summit in Portugal that only Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, ousted in a June coup, had the right to call elections.

Silva left the summit of leaders from Latin America, Spain and Portugal before the final session to go on a state visit to Ukraine.

A Spanish government official said there was little likelihood of a joint summit declaration on last weekend's Honduran ballot because of the differing opinions of participating nations.
