PROPOSED LAND LAW CHANGES IN MANGAIA TURNED DOWN

Mangaia traditional leaders or Aronga Mana has turned down a proposal to change the land tenure system on their island.

According to the secretary of the Aronga Mana Tuaiva Mautairi, the proposal by high chief Numangatini Ariki has come as a shock to all Mangaian people who are also angry.

Mautairi says people will not welcome outside influence whatsoever to the land tenure.

The Mangaia land system is unique and runs under a tribunal court who does not allow outside influence.

Land cannot be leased and Mangaians wanting land to build will see the arbitrator or head of the family who may or may not agree to a request.

Failing an agreement the case can go to the next level, to the kavana, the district chief. And if there is no agreement at this stage then it goes before the six Kavana of the island and their decision is final.

Its understood Numangatini Ariki's proposal is the result of a push by Mangaians living in New Zealand to try and change the system.

Mautairi says it is hoped that the issue to make any changes does not ever happen again.
