'wouldn't be here if they didn't want to' - you have to love how these men justify it to themselves.

it's shocking how complicit the thai authorities are in dealing with the situation... and how western countries exacerbate this on a grand economic scale, along with westerners themselves supporting it on the ground.

anyone visiting SE Asia should read this blog.

the guidebooks do nothing to discourage this and even go on to list 'go-go bars' - write to them! http://www.lonelyplanet.com/contact/general-feedback.cfm

I find this article very problematic, fundamentally I think selling and buying sex is not wrong. I don't see it any differently from selling any other service. I also think woman should have the right to decide for themselves what they do with their own bodies. Criminalising prostitution in the same way as Sweden would only create an underground black market for sexual services and put women at more risk. I also don't like the way the author tries to mix prostitution with trafficing and slavery, there are already laws against trafficing and slavery and I believe they should be vigorously enforced. As for the big difference in income between tourists and the locals this is true but is it any different between you and the factory worker that makes your clothes, computers and almost anything you buy ? I don't think so.

James - The author does not mix prostitution with trafficking and slavery - they are inseparable in reality. Unfortunately, there IS no choice for these women.
