KINGSTON; Jamaica: World and Olympics 100m champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser, has been appointed the first national Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF Jamaica.

Fraser received her certificate of appointment and a pin to identify  her as goodwill ambassador at Monday night’s All-Stars Track Dinner, a fundraiser for Haiti held at Acropolis Restaurant in Kingston. Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell attended the dinner.

Robert Fuderich, UNICEF Representative, in announcing the appointment, said: “Tonight I have the distinguish pleasure of adding another first to Shelly-Ann’s list of accomplishments, in additional to being the first Jamaica female to win gold in the Olympics 100m event, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Shelly-Ann Fraser as the first National Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF Jamaica, since UNICEF was establish in Jamaica 13 years ago.”

The group, believes the main threats to Jamaican childhood are HIV/AIDS, violence and exclusion, and along with its partners work to ensure  all children get the best start in life, receive a quality basic education and grow up protected against violence, abuse and discrimination.

According to Fuderich, “as a National Goodwill Ambassador of Jamaica, Shelly-Ann will focus on early childhood development and education, an area where she is naturally drawn.”

“We know she will take her role seriously and my entire team is looking forward to work with her in the coming years,” he said of Fraser, a final year Child Care and Development student at the University of Technology (UTech).

Fraser who welcomed her appointment said she will play her part in early childhood development. ”Thanks to UNICEF Jamaica for appointing me Goodwill Ambassador. I know I will carry out the task of making Jamaicans aware that children are our future….”

“I am really, really pleased to be apart of that and I am looking forward to work with you and try to accomplish the goals you set out,” she said. Fuderich said: “The more we talk and we met with Shelly-Ann, the more we felt she was the natural  fit for UNICEF.”
