Smart's three-year loss more than $5 billion, report says

DaimlerChrysler took a 3.9 billion euro loss -- around $5.2 billion -- on its Smart brand between 2003 and 2006, reports German newspaper Handelsblatt. The paper cites documents from Smart GmbH's liquidation and subsequent restructuring under the Mercedes-Benz group.

Mercedes-Benz is still planning on bringing the Smart fortwo to the U.S. market for 2008, but critics are skeptical as to whether there's enough demand for the minicar for it to be profitable -- especially in a driving environment much different from the European roads it was designed to traverse.

Just last year, Smart's losses cut profits at Mercedes-Benz by 1.6 billion euros. A DaimlerChrysler representative has vowed Smart will become profitable by year's end, according to the report. DaimlerChrysler has thus far remained silent on profit margins for the Mercedes-Benz group.

Profitable by year's end?

Maybe because they're slashing all the other models.

Smart's been a financial disaster since the get go. There are dozens of similarly-priced vehicles sold in Europe that are much more practical.

The Smart is simply too dangerous for American streets.

So wait, who do they say is responsible for the unprofitability of Chrysler Group? I think it might just be that the guys in Stuttgart only know how to take care of MB, and just can't handle the, whatever it is, that it takes to run more than one major auto company.

Bringing the smart here can be really dangerous for a dying company such as CG. They have yet to score with their out going models and i think mb has alot to do with the company's eventual demise. I think the name Chrysler should be dropped and just say Dodge. Chrysler is bringing down the house and its starting to hurt the others. Dodge and Jeep should stay and lets just let Chrysler die a dignified death.
