HELMETS A MUST

April 12 2008 is the date for all motorbike owners and cyclists to wear an approved safety helmet, according to police.

"The law has been enforced and anyone riding a motorcycle without a helmet will be fined $100 immediately. That also includes kids and others riding pillion.

Acting Police Commissioner, Maara Tetava said that people have had time enough to prepare for the new law and officers will not accept excuses.

Legislation for the compulsory wearing of helmets is part of the amendment in the 2007 Transport Act passed in December of last year.

Amendment in the Act follows concerns about safety on roads, especially with motorcyclists viewed as "getting out of hand" by Police, the Ministry of Health, Government and the general public.
