Despite being designated as a protected area in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, Cristalino State Park faces threats from cattle ranching, unsustainable timber extraction, soya plantations and fire. FFI has been helping the Brazilian NGO Cristalino Ecological Foundation to ward off these threats including establishing a 6000ha private reserve which protects the lower reaches of the Cristalino River, while building the organisation’s capacity to protect the park in the long-term. We have also supported their innovative jaguar conservation awareness campaign and the “Escola de Amazonia”, which immerses local children in ‘forest classrooms’.
