How is FFI tackling climate change?

As one of the world’s oldest and most experienced conservation organisations, FFI has a wealth of experience to bring to bear on developing forest protection on the ground. By effectively protecting carbon-rich habitats, our existing projects already act to secure over 200 million tonnes of CO2.

How is FFI tackling climate change?FFI recognises that climate change will be one of the main causes of biodiversity loss in the future. We also recognise that we collectively need to take every avenue open to us to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As such we have integrated climate change - and what we can do to respond - into our conservation strategy for the next five years.

We are working to:

Prevent emissions from natural habitats by using both carbon finance and carbon philanthropy to secure key areas of carbon-storing tropical forest.

Inform global policies on protecting natural carbon by sharing the lessons learned from our habitat protection projects and ensuring carbon-based forest protection measures also protect biodiversity and respect the rights and livelihoods of local communities.

Help biodiversity adapt to climate change both at the project sites we work at and by raising awareness of the importance of natural ecosystems in helping human populations cope with climate change.

Increase the capacity of people to mitigate and adapt to climate change by helping the many partner organizations and local communities we work with around the world grasp and respond to the debate, and by increasing our own capacity as an organization to tackle the issue.

Reduce our own emissions by strengthening the way we track them and then minimizing them in every area of our work.
