We've showed you which metro areas have the highest percentage of bachelor's degree holders according to Brookings Institute data -- now here's the reverse side of the coin. On which end of the spectrum does your metro area -- which Brookings calls "the nation’s essential economic and societal units" -- place?

For more information, see Brookings' interactive data map.

Five of these cities are in California's Central Valley. Republican all the way, and living in the least scenic part of CA.

It is common knowledge and FACT that the uneducated people in NY, NJ and Philadelphia move to Scranton, regardless of the educational systems in their areas.

It is FACT that most of the drug dealing, theiving, robbing, murders, etc. are the result of NY, NJ and Philly transplants who can't make it in the big cities.

The educated Scrantonians or Northeast PA'ers move out of the area to DC, NY, NJ, etc. This is FACT. They are highly valued and highly paid in their positions outside of the area.

I think that whoever did this was trying to be politically correct. By pointing out several cities in CA, versus only 2 in the South....I will say that this is completely not accurate.

Agreed- the omission of several well known and well documented bastions of foolery is very suspect...

This has to be wrong. As someone who has seen multiple cities in all states but two I can't believe the following didn't make the list:

Missouri
Monroe and Baton Rouge Louisiana
Gary, Bloomington, Terre Haute and South Bend Indiana
Everything in West Virginia that isn't Roanoke
Everything in Alabama that isn't Birmingham
Everything in Arkansas that isn't Little Rock
Macon Georgia
Tyler and Texarkana Texas

Have to defend Arkansas a bit. The Univ of Ark is in Fayetteville, not Little Rock.

The proximity of colleges and the percentage of people having obtained college degrees would be the means used in this study to statistically determine the education level of residents I'm guessing. I'm speaking from an unofficial, observational epidemiological perspective I suppose you could say. I lived in Norfolk VA for a minute right down the road from Old Dominion University for example, but I wouldn't ever necessarily go so far to describe the community off campus or on as "educated"...there are many factors that contribute to a persons education level I guess, college being just one of those.

Yeah I think Gary Indiana would have to have been on that list. Perhaps they didn't want to seem racist.

the country is filled with uneducated bass-ackwards all-white towns, I can't imagine they wouldn't have enough material to even it out. Plenty of ignorance to represent all races fairly ;)

You are correct, I think your list is accurate.

Some that blog here think it is a joke and have no answers.

1. build schools like a prison with towers and guards that can view what is going on in the prison grounds

2. If students does not complete their homework lockdown will occur and they will stay at the school facility for a week.

These two suggestions will change the inferior education system we have now and bring about a new culture of young people that understands the word RESPECT.

I am quite sure, based on your comment, that you do not understand the word RESPECT.

The reason we have uneducated people is because the uneducated NY, Philly and NJ residents who can't make it big in the 'big cities' move to our area. This is FACT.

So funny, and wrong. From eHow.
http://www.ehow.com/list_5833922_top_ranked-states-education.html

" New Jersey usually ranks in the top five states for education. The state rankings for math assessment are usually in the top five, while assessments for reading and writing are consistently in the top 20 states. Nearly 90 percent of individuals living in New Jersey of post-college age have obtained a Bachelor's Degree while 12 percent have obtained an advanced degree. "U.S. News and World Report" states that more than 16 percent of nearly 400 high schools in New Jersey have been awarded a bronze, silver or gold award. "

Nice try! PA isn't even near the top 10.

Also, NJ is ranked in the top 10 on the Brookings map, the best PA can do is 60 something in rank. Hmmmm.

The hellholes of America. Surprisingly, the South and California are well represented.

It's a pity that despite having so many resources there are still so many cities in the United States that have such low levels of education. Resources from other areas such as military and aerospace should be shifted towards education and poverty alleviation.

I know many of those cities, as being the capitals of agricultural counties. Most of the California counties that are represented on this list are agricultural areas as is Polk County, Florida (beef cattle and orange juice).

My question is: Do all of these cities vote Republican? If not, which ones are more liberal and why? And, are all of these cities centers of Fundamentalist Christianity? Do these counter correlations with education hold true for these less degreed cities? If so, how does that affect education?

I am actually surprised Phoenix or no city in Arizona is in here, not to bash the state, I live here and will get my degree (if all goes well) by this time next year but considering how education is like 49 or 50th in the country I'm really surprised we're not on the list.

How are you going to get a degree with your finger in your mouth?
LRanger2   4 hours ago (7:44 AM)
IMHO as a greater Phoenix resident, Phoenix is not considered because the education level of illegal aliens is undetermined.

I was surprised not to see Cleveland, OH since it's necessary to graduate from high school before garnering a college degree, plus I was humored by Youngstown, OH since I used to work in that old building shown in the photo...
