"A requiem for the post war dream" reads the tagline.

"Ergh" says the unfortunate sap (me) listening to said requiem.

Didn't Killing Joke do a song called 'Requiem' that The Foo Fighters later covered? Yeah? Well both versions are better than this depressing dirge of self-fellating pomposity. A requiem,_ really_? Maybe, but you wouldn't flock to mass to hear this one...

Maybe DiS's young ears are too, well, young to get what the heck Roger Waters was blabbering on about in 1983? Something about the Falklands for sure, and the Tories. Great. The hardcore politics wouldn't be so bad if only the music could match the majesty of previous *Pink Floyd *releases - 'The Final Cut' was Waters' last release with David Gilmour and co, and his overbearing influence upon it makes for a whole different experience than their more accessible works.

The addition of 'When The Tigers Broke Free' is a bonus for collectors - the single having made number one in the charts but never included on the original album - but for newcomers to the Floyd, 'The Final Cut' is hard work. Rays of light are few and far between, and even on paper the track titles - including 'The Gunner's Dream' and 'Paranoid Eyes' - suggest an arduous listen. Q Magazine once compiled a top ten list of depressing records, and this was on it. Enough said, I think.

''the single having made number one in the charts but was not included on the original album''

I checked everyhit.com because that seemed fairly unbelievable.

It was number 39, in fact.

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut: Remastered

Bloody Pink Floyd...never exactly the best judges of their own work, were they? Tedious, pompous, self-indulgent shite comes little more tedious, pompous and self-indulgent than this.

Re: Pink Floyd - The Final Cut: Remastered

...is this a new cd that has/is coming out?

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut: Remastered

Hmmm. By even the most fervent Floyd fans standards, this album 3 or 4 good songs, and 7 or 9 shite ones.

Re: Pink Floyd - The Final Cut: Remastered

And the lesson learned is...

...never trust a press release.

It was a big-selling 7" tho'.

Re: Pink Floyd - The Final Cut: Remastered

doesn't the press release just say the album was number one....?

Re: Pink Floyd - The Final Cut: Remastered

Maybe.
I've thrown it away now so I can't check.
It wasn't a very good one.

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut: Remastered

Erm....This is a magnifcient and brillaint record. And I too, hated it the first 10 times I listened to it. Utterly hated it.

If there's one lost classic in the floyd catalog, it's this one. the single that is 'When the Tigers Broke Free' is dire, and the only proper singl;e off this is the excerable "Not Now John" - but for two songs alone, it matches some of the most touchingly powerful lyrics ever wirteen. (Try the songs 'Southampton Dock' and 'The Final Cut' - the former is especially presceient now)

Its dated badly with its lyrical references, but its blatant anti-war message is as true now as then. If not more so.

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut: Remastered

While it's true that this is not a CD to put on if you want to inject some life into your party, quite the opposite in fact, it is true that it's one of the most stunning, beautiful sonic masterpieces to come from the mind of Roger Waters.

As World War 2 fades into history, we can't forget that it was probably the most significant global event of the 20th century. Its direct effects on several generations, as well as its aftermath (which is generally what TFC addresses), can bever really be counted.

When music is used as a catharsis, which is what The Final Cut is, the result is art in its purest form. It should always be encouraged and celebrated. It's real and pure. RW poured his heart into it and dropped some serious emational baggage. It's practically a spiritual event.

The Final Cut is also the perfect epilogue for The Wall. Its only shortcoming is its lack of major commercial value, which doesn't have any real effect on its intrinsic value. Also, it was unfortunatley made at a time when tension between the band members was increasing. Apparently, it got a little too personal, and the other members didn't enjoy any emotionally liberating process.

Re: Pink Floyd - The Final Cut: Remastered

I used to see a girl who swore this was one of the best records ever.

She only got me to listen to it two and a half times. But from what I remember it was rubbish. An acquired taste?
