A Stalker Disrupts Toni Braxton's Broadway Stint

October 27, 1998|By W. Speers This article contains information from the Associated Press, Reuters, New York Post, New York Daily News, and USA Today

Toni Braxton is being stalked by an obsessed fan so insistent that the situation has affected her daily life and that of the Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast, in which she stars. In response to a bombardment of threatening e-mails and letters, the singer - who plays Belle in the show - wears a disguise when leaving the theater, leaves with a security guard by the front doors used by theatergoers, has reduced her performances from eight to seven a week, and no longer signs autographs for fans. Said a source close to the show: ``She's like a prisoner. She has to look over her shoulder wherever she goes. . . . The Disney people are very concerned about it.'' There's a possible plan of putting metal detectors in the theater. As it is, undercover security people eyeball theatergoers as they arrive. Deborah Gibson, who also played Belle, was stalked earlier this year. Michael Folkner was charged in that instance, and his case is pending. Stewart Lane, co-owner of the theater where Beauty is playing, said only: ``The theater is taking every precaution necessary to ensure the safety of the cast and the audience.''

MARKINGS * The reclusive Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Russia's most famous living writer, made a rare public appearance in Moscow yesterday at the unveiling of a monument to Anton Chekhov before a theater named for Chekhov. Solzhenitsyn, who will be 80 next month, spoke for a few minutes to an indifferent crowd of several hundred, then quietly slipped away with wife Natalia. Once an icon, the 1970 Nobel Prize winner is largely ignored by contemporary Russians.

New York Post gossipteer Neal Travis is reporting that Prince Rainier, at last accepting that son Prince Albert will never take a bride, has moved to change the rules of succession, allowing Princess Caroline's eldest boy, Andre, 13, to take the throne if Albert produces no male heir. As it now stands, Monaco reverts to French rule if Albert has no heir. Albert could address the situation when he visits the Big Apple next week for the Princess Grace Foundation awards gala at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
