Singles

For the fifth consecutive week, LMFAO and their Party Rock Anthem holds the top spot on the ARIA singles chart. Pitbull climbs from No.3 to No.2 with Give Me Everything. In its second week on the chart, David Guetta’s Where Them Girls At has stormed from No.34 to No.6. After taking a dive, Lady Gaga’s Judas and Born This Way have both made moves back up, now at No.13 and No.17 respectively. Jessie J’s new single, Nobody’s Perfect, has moved fifty-two places in its second week (from No.76 to No.24). After a week out of the top 100, Jennifer Lopez’s I’m Into You fires back in at No.47.

 

THE EDGE OF GLORY - Lady Gaga

No.11

With her much-anticipated album Born This Way days away from release, Lady Gaga releases the album’s third single, The Edge Of Glory. The single follows on from the album’s title track (No.1 Feb. ’11) and Judas (No.6 Apr. ’11). The track was inspired by Gaga’s late grandfather. It features a saxophone solo by Clarence Clemons from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. Gaga stated in an interview that the song was one of her favourites on the album.

 

 

DIRTY DANCER - Enrique Iglesias Feat. Usher & Lil Wayne
No.36

This is the fourth single to enter the ARIA singles chart from Enrique Iglesias’ album, Euphoria (No.6 July ’10). Dirty Dancer is a collaboration between Iglesias, Usher and rapper, Lil Wayne. The single follows on from the success of I Like It (No.2 July ’10), Heartbeat (No.5 Nov. ’10) and Tonight (I'm Lovin' You) (No.2 Jan. ’11). A version of the track without Lil Wayne also appears on the Usher release, Versus.

 

 

LOUD - Stan Walker
No.38
Loud is the first single to come from former Australian Idol winner, Stan Walker’s forthcoming third album. The track was recorded in Los Angeles during sessions for the follow-up to From The Inside Out (No.2 Aug. ’10). It is his fourth song to chart in Australia. Walker has previously had singles success with Black Box (No.2 Nov. ’09), Unbroken (No.23 May ’10) and Choose You (No.16 Aug. ’10). As well as making music, Walker recently acted in a New Zealand-made film, A Gift To Zion.

 

 

JET LAG - Simple Plan Feat. Natasha Bedingfield

This is the second single to come from Canadian quintet, Simple Plan’s forthcoming fourth album - Get Your Heart On! The track is the first to chart from the album after first single, Can't Keep My Hands Off You failed to make an impact on the chart. There are two different versions of Jet Lag. There is an English version that features vocals by Natasha Bedingfield and the second version features French-Canadian singer Marie-Mai performing the same part but in French. Simple Plan’s highest-charting single to date is Perfect (No.6 July ’04).

 

 

FEEDING LINE - Boy & Bear
No.59

Forming in 2009 and hailing from Sydney, this 5-piece band make a welcome return to the ARIA singles chart after last charting with, Fall At Your Feet (No.34 Nov. ’10).  Boy & Bear, which originally started off as a solo project for Dave Hosking (vocals/guitar), later became a quintet with Jake Tarasenko (bass), Killian Gavin (vocals/guitars), Tim Hart (drums/vocals) and Jon Hart (banjo/mandolin/keys) joining him.

 

 

I FEEL PRETTY / UNPRETTY - Glee Cast
No.62
The first of two Glee Cast entries this week is a mash up of Westside Story’s I Feel Pretty and TLC’s Unpretty (No.3 Oct. ’99).  The track was featured in the “Born This Way” episode of Glee, which the central topic of the episode is based on bullying.

 

 

IF TIME IS ALL I HAVE - James Blunt
No.64

Skyrocketing out of obscurity in 2005, James Blunt entered our singles chart with High, which debuted at No.88 in June 2005 and went on to peak at No.46 over a year later.  It was not until the release of his second single, You’re Beautiful (No.2 Nov. ’05) did people stop and take notice of this musician.  Blunt followed this up with four more top 20 hits spanning over the next five years.  If Time Is All I Have is the second single taken from Blunt’s current album, Some Kind Of Trouble (No.8 Nov. ’10).

 

 

BORN THIS WAY - Glee Cast
No.76
Taking on Lady Gaga is the Glee Cast with Born This Way.  The original was a chart topper for Gaga earlier this year.  This track is taken from the Glee episode also titled, Born This Way and it pays homage to Lady Gaga, the second episode so far in the series to do so.

 

 

TURNING TABLES - Adele
No.81

This is the third single to be lifted from current chart topper Adele’s album, 21 (No.1 May ’11).  Turning Tables follows Someone Like You (No.32 May ’11) and Rolling In The Deep (No.7 May ’11), which is Adele’s highest position on the singles chart so far.  The Grammy and Brit award winning singer/songwriter currently ranks ninth place on the list of the richest British and Irish singers under age of thirty, tying with Lily Allen and Duffy.

 

 

WE RUN THE NITE - Tonite Only
No.99
Dance music duo, Tonite Only comprises of DJ/producers Sam La More (Sam Littlemore) and Groove Terminator (Simon Lewicki).  They formed in Sydney in 2005 and released two nightclub favourites - Danger (The Bomb) and Where’s The Party At, but with the release of We Run The Nite, Tonite Only make their debut to the ARIA singles chart.  The new single is currently spending its eighth consecutive week at No.1 on the ARIA Club Chart.

Albums

Adele’s dominance of the top spot continues this week. 21 has been No.1 for three weeks now, reflecting her dominance on charts in a multitude of other countries. Adele’s debut album, 19, has also moved up ten places to sit at No.27 this week.  Damien Leith maintains second place with Roy. Storming its way up ten places to No.3 is Ronan Keating’s collaborative album with Burt Bacharach, When Ronan Met Burt. Artists experiencing strong moves on the back of Mother’s Day sales include Michael Buble and James Blunt.

 

IN YOUR DREAMS - Stevie Nicks
No.24
In Your Dreams is the seventh solo album from Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks and her first studio effort in ten years. The follow-up to Trouble In Shangri-La (No.70 May ’01) has been produced by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, along with Glen Ballard (Michael Jackson, Alanis Morissette, No Doubt). The album features a host of guests, including Fleetwood Mac band mates Lindsay Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood, as well as Mike Campbell and Steve Ferrone from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. To celebrate the release of the album, Nicks joined forces with Rod Stewart for a tour across the US and Canada.

 

 

HARD BARGAIN - Emmylou Harris

The long and illustrious career of country singer-songwriter, Emmylou Harris continues with Hard Bargain. The album is Harris’ 22nd solo studio album and her highest-charting on the ARIA albums chart. Her last album to chart was 2008’s All I Intended To Be (No.58 July ’08). In January of this year, Harris was the headliner on the opening night of the Sydney Festival.

 

 

THIS IS GONNA HURT - Sixx: A.M.
No.53

This is the second album for Motley Crue bassist, Nikki Sixx and his side project Sixx:A.M. This Is Gonna Hurt is the trio’s first album to enter the ARIA albums chart. Their first album was The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack - a companion piece to Sixx’s autobiography of the same name. This Is Gonna Hurt serves as the soundtrack to Sixx’s second book, which was released in April.

 

 

LET THEM TALK - Hugh Laurie
No.55
Better known for his work the doctor on television series – House, actor Hugh Laurie displays his musical talents with this, his debut album. Laurie plays guitar and piano on Let Them Talk, as well as singing lead vocals. Guests on the album include Tom Jones and Dr John. The material consists mostly of classic jazz and blues numbers. In the UK, the album debuted at No.2. It was held off the top spot by the all-conquering Adele.

 

 

MATTHEW MORRISON - Matthew Morrison

This is the debut solo album from Glee star, Matthew Morrison. The actor, known for his portrayal of teacher, Will Schuester on the hit program, began appearing in Broadway musicals at age 12. He has appeared in productions of Footloose, Hairspray and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Artists appearing with Morrison on his debut album include Elton John, Sting and Gwyneth Paltrow.

 

 

SIMPLE MATH - Manchester Orchestra
No.83
Atlanta-based quintet, Manchester Orchestra makes their debut on the ARIA albums chart with Simple Math. The album is the band’s third studio release, following debut album I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child (2006) and Mean Everything To Nothing (2009). Group leader, Andy Hull has said that the album is a concept record, expressing his perspectives of everything from marriage to love to religion to sex. The group is currently touring North America in support of the album.

 

 

THE PLATINUM COLLECTION - Russell Watson
No.84
This is a compilation of the decade-long career of British tenor, Russell Watson. Tracks featured on the album include Ave Maria, Time To Say Goodbye, Bamboleo, The Prayer, Let It Snow and ‘O Sole Mio. Watson debuted on the ARIA albums chart with The Voice (No.10 Feb. ’02).
