MALE, January 17 (HNS) – President Mohamed Nasheed today ratified the National University Act to which the government says would propose amendments soon.

According to the Act, the university aimed at providing education and training to secondary graduates in areas necessary for national development will run under a university council.

Press Secretary at President’s Office Mohamed Zuhair said the president identified several issues that have not been addressed in the Act.

“In process that leads to the ratification of a bill, the president will return the bill for reconsideration if a legal issue might arise following the ratification. He ratifies a bill that lacks certain matters but would propose amendments to it later,” he said.

The Act requires the university to be established within 30 days of ratification of the Act. Maldives College of Higher Education (MCHE) will also be transferred under the university according to the Act.

The former regime tried to make MCHE as the national university. However, several issues prevented the former administration to proceed with its plan.

Education Minister Shifa Mohamed recently said the government is working on establishing the university under the National University Act.

The minister earlier revealed plans to establish another university in Laamu atoll Gan this year and expressed hope that Maldivian students will be able to pursue higher education from the university.

I manage a small private company. I have recruited some Maldivian degree holders or more to help boost my business with their knowledge. Guess what:the people who have no big qualifications and a few expats are helping me much more than these big headed guys.I hope if they do their studies here, they will have a better attitude towards work. Our people need to develop good working mentality. Education is a passport to obtain good jobs but we are worthless if we have a big degree and we don't know what hardwork, loyalty and discipline mean!!!
