A Look at the New Nintendo 3DS Game Cards
Here is what the new 3DS game cards and 3DS game card slots look like.
By Chris Pereira, 06/21/2010
Along with the new Nintendo 3DS system itself, Nintendo has developed new game cards to go along with the system. At the E3 demo booths last week, the game card slots were covered up, according to Kotaku, but we now have a look at both the 3DS' slots and the new 3DS game cards courtesy of esuteru.com.
The cards look mostly the same as the current line of DS cards, but these new ones support a 2GB capacity. And as a result, the slot itself looks mostly identical to those on the current line of DS systems. Nothing particularly exciting, but it's possible the new game cards play some role in Nintendo's increased anti-piracy measures the 3DS is supposed to sport. We can't know for sure, of course, as Nintendo doesn't want to give out any details that might help pirates in trying to circumvent those new anti-piracy measures.

The official site says "2 GB Max. at launch."
That could either mean that the cards will be maxed out right from the get-go, or that they'll grow the further we get into 3DS' lifecycle.

Considering the trend of typical memory cards...

I'd say it's the latter. Three years down the road we could be seeing 8GB cards or more.

Why So Big?

To handle twice the images? I wonder if 2gb means we'll only have 1gb games twice or will the games actually be GCN size? Will we eventually have 4gb games and do we really need game cards so big? I got 8gb on my SD micro right now, althought those are a pain to keep track of.

Not really about that

That kinda of logic might sort of be true for RAM, but for read-only memory I doubt it. Well, unless each eye needed slightly different textures or something.
I'm liking this 2GB max, gotta say it was more than I expected Nintendo to provide. Wonder what the average game size will be.

Are about 1.25 - 1.50gigs max on those little mini-discs. So depending on the hardware it may be plausible.
