Department of Plant Production and Soil Science

Introduction

Analytical and controlled environment facilities are essential in conducting high-quality agricultural, biological and environmental research. The Department of Plant Production and Soil Science have numerous facilities to conduct the above-mentioned research. These facilities include:

The combination of controlled-condition facilities and the field section allows for unique research approaches involving simulation of field conditions through to validation of findings under natural conditions. The University of Pretoria, in particular the Department of Plant Production and Soil Science, has in the past made extremely effective use of these facilities in conducting internationally-accredited research. Except for the laboratories, these facilities are situated on our Hatfield Experimental Farm. The Experimental Farm facilities are grouped under the collective term “phytotron” for purposes of efficient management. In addition to phytotron facilities, the Department manages a significant area dedicated to field experiments on the Hatfield Experimental Farm.
