Samsung Galaxy S2: Sales figures out of this world
If parentage is anything to go by, Samsung must have been confident when it launched the Galaxy S successor, the S2. And it would appear that buoyancy was well justified - because the Korean giant reckons it has now shipped five million of the things.
Samsung claims to have passed that milestone in just 85 days from the date it first unveiled the Android-powered galactic successor.
The Korean firm hasn't offered an exact breakdown of figures but says the number quoted includes handsets shipped to network operators rather than just those sold directly to the public.
It also claims to have 56% of the market share in its native South Korea as well as being the number one manufacturer in other nations.
We find it easy to believe - as until comparatively recently you couldn't get your hands on one for love nor money in the UK, leading some to worry that Samsung just couldn't cope with supply.
With the original Galaxy S selling five million units in its first five months on sale last year (and indeed, still being offered to customers), the S2 has already apparently beaten that record. Some analysts reckon it could pass the 10 million mark by the end of the year.

Seems a bit of a false figure to me, they've shipped 5 million but that includes network operators. They could have shipped 5 million to the network operators and no buggers bought the thing! When will manufacturers start to quote the actual figure sold to end consumers, surely it only counts as sold when a person has it in their hand using it.

@Skywasher - never, because they can't measure it accurately. You can be talking about four parties involved - the manufacturer, the distributor (business which holds stock in country and deals with smaller retailers), the retailer, and the end customer. The retailer knows what it has sold to the end customer (obviously), the distributor will know what it has sold to what retailers (and may well share this with the manufacturer), but will not generally know what has sold to end customers. So the manufacturer knows what it has sold to its customers (distributors and large retailers), and MAY know what has been sold to some of the smaller retailers. The ONLY thing it can know for sure is what it has actually sold/shipped itself.

I understand where you are coming from but it's a lot easier for a manufacturer to just straight off say how many they've shipped rather than ask every retailer how many have been sold and tally it up (although they are bound to have this information eventually anyway). On Orange at least, I know they've had a very hard time keeping up with supply and are constantly having to say they're sold out.

Still waiting out for it to be released with NFC here in the UK! Then I will get the phone on a 12 month contract. Still using my HTC Hero!!.
