Green wins Brewers' final NLDS roster spot
MILWAUKEE -- Major League Baseball's wild regular-season finale proved a boon for Brewers rookie Taylor Green, who earned the team's 25th and final National League Division Series roster spot based largely on the opponent.
The Brewers formally filed their NLDS roster to Major League Baseball on Saturday and, as expected, Green got the nod over the more veteran, right-handed-hitting Josh Wilson. "It's unbelievable. What a year," said Green, the Brewers' Minor League Player of the Year. "I was just happy to be here in the first place, and this is a bonus." Matchups drove the decision. The D-backs' primary late-inning relievers, including closer J.J. Putz, are right-handed. Had the Braves won the NL Wild Card -- and they were in the mix until the 13th inning of the final day -- then Atlanta would be Milwaukee's opponent for the NLDS and Wilson would have made the cut. The Braves have two lefty relievers who appeared in the late innings in Jonny Venters and Eric O'Flaherty. "There's certainly disappointment that comes along with that," said Wilson, claimed off waivers by the Brewers from the D-backs on May 25. "We play to win a championship, and I've always wanted to be in that situation, have an opportunity to play in the playoffs. I've been here, and I want to be in that situation. But a lot could happen. There are still possibilities." Wilson, pitcher Tim Dillard and catcher Martin Maldonado will all remain with the Brewers and will be allowed in uniform on the bench or in the bullpen. The final bench spot was the Brewers' only lingering decision. The rest of the NLDS roster looked like this: Pitchers: Starters Yovani Gallardo, Zack Greinke, Shaun Marcum and Randy Wolf; and relievers John Axford, Francisco Rodriguez, Takashi Saito, LaTroy Hawkins, Kameron Loe, Marco Estrada and Chris Narveson. Catchers: Jonathan Lucroy and George Kottaras. Infielders: First baseman Prince Fielder, second baseman Rickie Weeks, shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, and Craig Counsell, Green, Jerry Hairston Jr. and Casey McGehee. Outfielders: Left fielder Ryan Braun, center fielder Nyjer Morgan and right fielder Corey Hart; plus Carlos Gomez and Mark Kotsay. "I'm certainly happy to still be here traveling with the team and giving whatever support I can give," Wilson said. "I'm going to do my best to prepare and stay sharp as if I'm going to play. If it comes the next series, or something unexpected happens and they have to activate me, then I'll be ready for that."Adam McCalvy is a reporter for MLB.com.
