AEROSMITH Working On 'Raw, Nasty, Tough Rock' Album For May 2012 Release - Aug. 30, 2011
AEROSMITH entered guitarist Joe Perry's home studio (The Boneyard) in suburban Boston and the Pandora's Box (the band's main studio) in early July with producer Jack Douglas to begin recording its long-awaited 14th studio album. The CD will be AEROSMITH's first set of original material since 2001's "Just Push Play" and first studio offering since 2004's covers CD, "Honkin' On Bobo".

In a brand new online posting, Douglas stated about AEROSMITH's new CD, "The new album should be out around May 2012. I know that's a long wait, but after the South American tour and Japan in October, November and December, we will just get back to work on it in mid-January."

He added, "For those who are asking, this album will be raw, nasty, tough rock with a good deal of the old AEROSMITH 'tongue in cheek.'"

In a videotaped message that was released via AEROSMITH's official web site, bassist Tom Hamilton stated about re-teaming with Douglas, "For those of you who don't know who Jack is, he's the guy who we worked with, producing our best albums of the '70s — 'Get Your Wings', 'Toys In The Attic' and 'Rocks'. And it's really gonna be cool, because there's no one that knows more about the soul of this band and the creative part of this band [than] Jack. We worked with him on [2004's covers CD] 'Honkin' On Bobo', but that wasn't all original material — most of that was not original material. This time it's gonna be all-new AEROSMITH songs."

He continued, "When people say, 'What was it like to work with Jack back then?' all I can say is we just laughed the whole time; there was always laughter going on, and fun, but at the same time really digging deep to get performances that were even better than we thought we could do."

The plan to resume work on a new disc follows the completion of singer Steven Tyler's first season as a judge on "American Idol". The band, minus Perry, did get together for a week earlier this year in Los Angeles to work on new material.

AEROSMITH and Tyler almost went their separate ways in late 2009, but reunited and toured last year. However, Tyler then stunned his bandmates by taking the "Idol" job, which pushed back work on the already-delayed new record.

I usually fall for the 'back to roots' claims. Better to be excited for it and disappointed than cynical.

Never too old to rock. It's never too late to turn it all around.

I'm so sick of hearing this shit for 30 years now!!!

There are guys in this group that would love to do a raw rock n roll album, but there are also American Idol judges in this group that are far more worried about their pathetic egos!

Hey Steven...you should get that turkey neck fixed before the new press photos go out!

was the last "tough, nasty" album. 32 years ago.

Not saying they can't do it. But that's one tall order to get within the realm of Rocks and Toy's. 2 of the greatest hard rock albums ever.

Tough task for a band who hasn't really been hungry since the dog days of Jimmy Crespo and Rock in a Hard Place...(has it been that long?)

good luck guys.

I mostly agree, although the cover of "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" off of Ruts is far lamer than anything off of Rock in a Hard Place or the underrated (if undercooked) Done With Mirrors.

They basically did that album as a reason to go out on an unofficial "reunion" tour at the time. They probably needed to put out something new the get the label behind them.

You make one good point..."Rock in a Hard Place" is a fantastic heavy rock record, but I must disagree with you on "Done with Mirrors", that album sucks besides the remake of Joe's, "Let the Music do the Talking".

People didn't give "Rock..." a chance because Joe and Brad weren't on it...but it fng rocks!

...we all know what it will sound like. Lots of over-production, ballads, hip-hoppy sound effects, etc.

It will probably start out as a rock album when they're writing it, but by the time the fix-it / production team finishes with it, it will the usual hi-gloss shine that that all their 90's > releases have.

with RockShowTrader. how many times have you heard this....but at least they may try, and it will be listenable. But when they were writing in LA, the usual anti rock guys were in attendance, Mark Hudson, and Desmond Child I think? You'll never get a bluesy edge with them. Especially Child.

they are all 60. Rough, ratty, and tough, that simply does not describe them on any level anymore. Its not 1976 anymore. While they sound decent for their age, and have some great energy for 60+, its still not the energy of a 27 year old.

The point was made too, Tyler doesn't want to remember before 1988, he's not going to give up all the pop star frills. He loves being on pop radio, getting that TMZ type attention, that's not going to come from a standard rock album. (I guess he's got Idol to fulfill that, but he seems to keep writing pop).

I knew Mark Hudson sucked from the shitty songs he wrote for these guys but I recently saw him on a VH1 wanna be rock star show and without any prejudice, I saw first hand what a fudgepacker that guy is!

If they don't write the music themselves and have Jack produce it...by himself! Then it's gonna suck big time!

Jack was a coproducer on that lame cover record they did a while back with the two important guys as the main producers! All bullshit!

Shit or get off the pot!!!

I'd say DWMirror, undercooked. If you had asked me in 1986 what I thought of it, I'd agree, I thought it was great, and under appreciated. Listened to it a couple of years ago, its nothing more than a demo, from a burnt out band. They used a Joe perry Project song, which was good(but not great), and some of their worst songs of all time. Sheila? terrible. He can't even think of lyrics, just repeats the title. (and Tyler was a very clever lyricist in their prime).

My fist your face was decent, but again, terrible lyrics, and the guitar sounds are so unASmith. Gyspy Boots, not good...I think if you revisited, you might agree, just a flat album....Rock in a Hard place had a lot more promise, song wise, but production is so muddy, Tyler's voice in shreds....that's all 25-30 years ago now. I'd take any of that over Jaded, Don't wanna miss a thing etc.

Yup, no arguments here. Clearly the producer of Done With Mirrors, Ted Templeman, brought nothing to the table to help them either with their songs or their sound. Templeman, I think, must just let bands be themselves in the studio and sometimes that works great when a group is at the top of their game (the early Van Halen albums) or not so much (Mirrors). But DWM is still a "tough, raw, nasty" record, IMO -- although, as you say, a flat one.

I hope these guys give it everything they have. I've always loved Aerosmith and if there is one band who I want to see come back and blow the doors off the rock world, it is Aerosmith!

Joe has said in the past year or so that he doesn't think they've made their best record. There are so many opinions about what is there best era. For me, "Vacation" and "Pump" are classic albums, and if they can get back to that vibe, maybe with some "Rocks" flavor, it will be a huge album! I cannot wait!!

Tyler is a pop icon now.

The previous about 5 Aerosmith albums have been a total joke.

I have ZERO faith that this new one will be anything like their classic era albums.

maybe if the record company wasn't writing the songs for them for once it wouldn't seem like an american idol cash grab. i know they're desperate to take any attention they can get, but come on. if you don't write your own songs, don't pretend that you're in a rock band.

Anyone who thinks Aerosmith back on drugs is a good thing is a fucking moron.

Aerosmith will never write another Rocks for the simple reason that they're not the people they were in 1975. Plus, they wrote music back then as if their lives depended on it. Their live don't depend on it now. I love this band - but facts are facts.

You know what I hate? When bands don't know when to let it go. I like Aerosmith, I think they have had some great songs over the years. But at some point, wouldn't it be wiser to just leave it alone and keep the great legacy you have, than make music that you know, deep down, isn't ever going to live up to what you once had?

I mean, I love new music, especially from bands that I love, but I just don't think these guys have it in them to write a great album without ehe helping hand of songwriters, producers and record label execs, who will end up watering the whole thing down and turning the CD into some sort of love ballad.

That's my opinion, I don't speak for everyone, but I think I'd rather an Aerosmith legacy that was great, than one that fizzled out into pop culture.

Anyone who says they are working on a raw, nasty, tough rock album probably really isn't.

Why do they need to keep on touring? Just finish the album! I don't care if it's pop crap, at least it's new stuff---tour behind that instead of the past hits.

agreed, I like the cover of "walkin' in the sand". Tyler's screaming verse is classic. I believe its Crespo playing the lead on that, JP only played on about half of night in the ruts.

Joe Perry isn't the one trying to get the band back to rough and nasty. I saw them last summer at Fenway, one of my biggest criticisms of that show, was Joe Perry's sound, which was light and jangly. Even on the heavier material, it was super clean, process. not close to rough and nasty. And the bit where he plays guitar vs. his guitar hero avitar, very un rough and nasty.

Ted Templeton added nothing to Done w/Mirrors. The band was still F'd up, and he added no guidance. They wanted a comeback album, but Geffen all but took control over after that. and it watered down future releases. Even if you like Pump, it could have been better. Just watching that "making of Pump", the bearded A&R man, comes in and takes Janie's got a gun, and says "its too weird, you got to get to the chorus, don't bore us". eech. Imagine of he'd done the same for say Led Zep's Kasmir. Give the fans some credit.
