Joel Ward has joined Crystal Palace for £400,000.

The versatile 22-year-old has penned a four-year deal with the Eagles, who finished 17th in the Championship last season.

Ward made a total of 96 appearances for Pompey after progressing through the Fratton youth ranks.

He made his debut in a Carling Cup victory over Hereford in August 2009 and also featured three times for the Blues in the Premier League.

The Emsworth youngster has been a regular for Pompey since they were relegated to the Championship, playing in a variety of defensive and midfield roles.

Ward – who had a spell on loan at Bournemouth earlier in his career – scored a total of six goals for the Blues.

And he wrote his name into Fratton folklore last December by netting a late equaliser against fierce rivals Southampton.

Blues boss Michael Appleton said: “Joel has been an absolute pleasure to work with.

“Most days he was the first person on the training pitch and the last one off it. He was always looking to improve as a player.

“He’s got a lot of attributes. He’s physically strong, he’s quick and can play in a number of different positions.

“Joel has been a big asset for this football club and he will be missed, but we wish him all the best for the future.”
