“The Express,” a biopic of Syracuse University football phenomenon Ernie Davis, is a paean to a supremely talented if largely unfamiliar sports hero, one which scores both on and off the field.

That’s due to director Gary Fleder, who spotlights not just Davis’ life, but also the times in which he lived and played.
