Ankara’s Flying Broom festival against ‘evil’

26 January 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The Turkish capital’s annual Uçan Süpürge (Flying Broom) International Women’s Film Festival has chosen “evil” as its main theme this year, an ironically fitting theme for the festival’s 13th edition, slated for May.
Running May 6-13 in Ankara, this year’s festival will take a cinematic look at evil tags ascribed upon women, such as witch, lesbian, prostitute, home wrecker and so on, for their conduct or lifestyles, while they try to survive violence, poverty, wars, immigration, economic crises and exploitation all around the world. The festival will highlight the cinematic depiction of “evil woman,” or the “femme fatale,” through its film selection, which has yet to be announced.

The 13th edition of the festival will also hold a short film competition with the same theme, the Ankara-based women’s NGO Flying Broom announced last week in a written statement. The winners of the competition, to be selected by an all-women jury, will be announced at the festival’s opening gala on May 6, the statement said. The director of the winning short film will get a TL 2,500 cash prize.
