Sussex County has committed $7,500 in public money to defeat the state’s plan to toll Interstate 95. Same for the city of Emporia and neighboring Greensville County. Even the tiny township of Stony Creek has joined the fight. It’s kicking in $1,500.
SUFFOLK Part of Wilroy Road will be closed Wednesday into Friday for sewer repair work. The 800 block of Wilroy Road will be closed to traffic from 9:30 a.m. Wednesday until Friday, a city news release said. Detours will direct drivers to use Nansemond Parkway, Progress Road, Suburban Drive and Route 58.
The remnants of Hurricane Sandy continue to affect travel in the Northeast. At Norfolk International Airport, airlines are operating on a limited basis today. Most flights to cities in the Northeast were canceled, but departures to other parts of the country were still scheduled.
HATTERAS An emergency ferry route has been activated between Stumpy Point and Rodanthe. The North Carolina Department of Transportation's Ferry Division said in a news release that the ferries will not run on a set schedule until Wednesday.
GLOUCESTER One man has died and his daughter is in critical condition after a crash Saturday on U.S. 17. Virginia State Police were called to the two-vehicle crash north of Willis Road about 5 p.m., according to a news release from Sgt. Michelle Anaya.
BOWLING GREEN Prosecutors have dropped charges against a bus dispatcher stemming from a Virginia crash that killed four passengers. The four involuntary manslaughter counts against Zhao Jian Chen were dismissed today at a hearing in Caroline County Circuit Court. He was set to go on trial on those charges following the May 31, 2011, crash on Interstate 95 north of Richmond.
At the height of the storm Monday, Virginia State Police personnel were fielding 155 calls for service per hour. From 12:01 a.m. Sunday until 10 a.m. today, troopers and dispatchers handled 5,098 calls for people needing help in high winds, heavy rains and snowfall across the state caused by Hurricane Sandy, according to a news release.
CHESAPEAKE Beginning today, drivers will have to pay a toll to cross the new South Norfolk Jordan Bridge. Tolls will begin at 1 p.m., according to a news release. The bridge has been open since Sunday, when more than 2,800 vehicles traveled the span during the first 12 hours it was open. Officials decided to waive the toll on Monday because of the storm.
Wind restrictions have been lifted at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel as Sandy pushes away from Hampton Roads. Level 2 restrictions were in place earlier this morning. The bridge-tunnel had been at Level 4 since Sunday. In other traffic news: - HOV lane restrictions are reinstated on all interstates as of this morning.
Almost all of the departing flights scheduled for this morning at Norfolk International Airport have been canceled.
Shortly after 5 a.m., nearly 25 departures had been canceled. All but one arrival - from Atlanta - had been canceled. That is a trend airport officials expect will continue into the day.
