Armed clashes take place in Nafusa Mountains

Tripoli, 11 November:

Armed clashes took place between fighters from the regions of Kabaw and Tiji in the Nafusa Mountains on Saturday, resulting in several injuries and at least one fatality.

The fighting is believed to have broken out after a Kabaw-based militia attempted to take weapons and ammunition from a military base in Tiji, but were prevented from doing so by guards for not having permission from the Ministry of Defence.

The confrontation escalated into an armed clash, which resulted in injuries on the Kabaw side. Later in the day, the Kabaw militia are said to have returned with reinforcements in the form of heavy weaponry, whereupon they are accused of having indiscriminately shelled the small village of Tiji, resulting in injuries which arrived at Jmail hospital later in the day.

Today, the Akhbar Kabaw unofficial news outlet was warning local residents to stay off roads going to Tiji for fear of further violence. It claimed that one Kabaw fighter had been killed in the clashes and several wounded from both sides.

Tiji was one of the principal sources of armaments used by Qaddafi for shelling against revolutionaries in the Nafusa Mountains during the revolution. Tiji is home to many members of the Sayaan tribe, which is also said to have supported Qaddafi in last year’s conflict.
