MANILA, Philippines - The number of victims of typhoon Pablo (Bopha) continues to rise, with 714 now confirmed dead and 890 missing.

Out of the 714 killed in the disaster, 457 have been identified while 257 are still awaiting identification, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Tuesday, December 11.

The number of injured people also rose to 1,906, while 110 people have been rescued, the agency reported.

Evacuation centers are now down to 134, housing 116,404 evacuees. A total of 191,706 people are also being served by relief workers outside evacuation centers.

Nearly 5.41 million people have been affected in total across 9 regions, the report said.

Damage is still estimated to reach P7.12 billion, but is expected to go up.

On Monday, the United Nations launched a US$65-M global aid appeal for the survivors of Pablo, which would initially help provide food, water and emergency shelter for 480,000 residents in the worst-hit areas.

Over the longer term, the UN aid program will also help survivors to recover emotionally and rehabilitate the devastated farm sector.

Australia, the United States, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, and China have also pledged to help the victims. - Rappler.com
