Birmingham City Centre Extension and Fleet Replacement

The Birmingham City Centre Extension (BCCE) will take Midland Metro from its current terminus at Snow Hill and extend it into the heart of the city to New Street Station.

This route ensures that high quality public transport links serve and support the 'Gateway' scheme and maximise the benefits of the regeneration of the station and the surrounding area in a deliverable and affordable way.

The proposed route runs for 1.4 kilometres through Birmingham city centre continuing from the existing track south of the current St Paul's tram stop.

A new stop to be called Snow Hill will be constructed on the existing railway viaduct at Livery Street/Lionel Street. This stop will provide interchange with national and local rail services at Snow Hill Station using the secondary access, and access to the neighbouring Ballymore development and those in the nearby Gun Quarter and Great Charles and Lionel Streets.

From the Snow Hill stop, the route leaves the existing Metro corridor and continues on a newly constructed viaduct through the Ballymore Development adjacent to Snow Hill Station and then onstreet along Colmore Circus Queensway, into Bull Street before turning onto Corporation Street across New Street and into Stephenson Street. A stop will be located on Stephenson Street providing interchange with New Street Station.

The four stops would be located in the following streets serving the main attractions in the city centre.

Snow Hill - will provide interchange with national rail services at Snow Hill Station via the secondary access and with the proposed mixed residential and commercial developments at Ludgate Street, Great Charles Street and Lionel Street.

Bull Street - links to city centre office core, the law courts, Children's Hospital, new developments around the Martineau Galleries area and interchange with the 'bus mall' for the city centre.

Corporation Street - part of the core centre for shopping and leisure, including the Bull Ring complex.

Stephenson Street - adjacent to New Street Station and the future redevelopment of the station and further access to the core shopping area at the Pallasades Shopping Centre.

New trams will be introduced to replace the existing fleet and enable the city centre extension to New Street Station to be served by ten trams an hour in each direction to Wolverhampton St Georges. The trams will have a capacity of approximately 200 passengers (compared to around 150 at present), increasing peak hour capacity by 40% along Line 1.

With Birmingham as a key economic engine for growth of the economy of the West Midlands, efficient and effective transport is essential to the city's future. Independent research by CEBR has estimated that the Metro extension will boost regional GVA by around £50 million by 2026 and boost employment by over 1,300 jobs.
