AUSTRALIA

According to government data, 22% of Australia is forested. This percentage is fairly stable; there has been a minimal reduction in natural forest cover in recent years, but a 12% growth in the amount of land under plantation since 2000. Almost 25 million ha of forest were damaged in forest fires between 2001 and 2006, which will have a significant impact on water catchment areas for many years whilst the forests re-grow.

The federal, state and territory governments are all signatories to the 1992 National Forest Policy Statement. A key element of the policy is the Regional Forest Agreements (RFAs) between the Commonwealth and State governments, which provide for forest conservation, secure access to forest resources and help promote investment in value-added manufacturing. RFAs establish a forest conservation reserve system, and sustainable forest management systems outside reserves.

Governments, industry and regional groups are also working together on Plantations for Australia ' The 2020 Vision, a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing wealth creation and international competitiveness through a sustainable increase in Australias plantations to around 3 million ha by 2020.

It is estimated that around $400 million worth of illegally sourced timber and timber products are imported into Australia each year, representing 9% of timber imports. The main products are wood furniture, paper and paper board, panels, sawn wood, doors and mouldings. In recognition of this, the government has committed $1 million to work with regional governments and industry on a number of measures, for example, developing capacity to prevent illegal timber harvesting, supporting certification schemes for timber sold in Australia, and restricting imports of illegal timber.

In August 2008, Australia announced a US$13.7 million fund for Asia-Pacific nations, the Asia-Pacific Forestry Skills and Capacity Building Program, to help tackle climate change by assisting countries in the region with forest management, combating illegal logging and boosting carbon storage in their forests.
