Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program

alert icon We recognize that the TRI-MEweb system was not available on July 1, 2013, the deadline of TRI Reporting for RY2012. Facilities should submit/certify their forms as soon as the system is live again (live as of 10:30 PM on July 1). EPA cannot provide a blanket enforcement waiver nor extend the reporting deadline at this time. However, EPA does have discretion in taking enforcement actions and will certainly take into account this disruption in TRI-MEweb service. Facilities are encouraged to document any problems encountered due to this outage in either Section 9.1 of their TRI Forms and/or in their files related to this year's reporting that they are required to keep as part of the Recordkeeping Requirements under EPCRA section 313.

2011 TRI National Analysis Report Now Available

The National Analysis is EPA's annual report summarizing the most recent TRI information at the national level and for selected urban communities, large aquatic ecosystems, and tribal lands. A variety of documents, webpages and online tools are available to help you learn about the TRI toxic chemicals managed at industrial facilities in 2011, including what those facilities are doing to prevent pollution.

  • Start browsing the National Analysis report
  • Find facility-level data with the myRTK mobile app
  • Generate reports based on chemicals, geographic areas, industries or reporting years using TRI Explorer
  • Learn how TRI facilities are reducing and preventing pollution on the new P2 webpage
  • Build customized searches and integrate results with mapping using TRI.NET

What is the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program

TRI is a database containing data on disposal or other releases of over 650 toxic chemicals from thousands of U.S. facilities and information about how facilities manage those chemicals through recycling, energy recovery, and treatment. One of TRI's primary purposes is to inform communities about toxic chemical releases to the environment.

"New Ways to Showcase Sustainability in Your 2012 TRI Report"

To help facilities prepare for the July 1st TRI reporting deadline, TRI hosted a webinar on June 5, 2013. This webinar provided training on completing the pollution prevention (P2) portion of the TRI reporting form, which gives facilities the opportunity to report and describe P2 activities and other environmentally-friendly practices related to TRI-listed toxic chemicals. Providing this information allows EPA to present a more complete picture of a facility's management of toxic chemicals and helps make TRI a more effective tool for highlighting and promoting P2 successes. To view the slides, visit the TRI Training For Reporting Year 2012 webpage.
